Chicago is in the grips of a deadly gang war. At least 275 people have been killed in the city so far this year and many more have been shot, many of them innocent bystanders to the gang violence. Among the latest victims were 12- and 13-year-old girls shot Tuesday night. They survived.
Sgt. Matt Little leads one of the teams in Chicago's Gang Enforcement Unit. There are about 200 such officers in the city-- versus 100,000 gang members.
"Almost all the violence we're seeing now is from the gangs," Little said. "When there's a shooting we'll respond to the shooting. We'll figure out where we believe the most likely area for retaliation is and we'll work that area trying to both prevent retaliation and possibly build a case on offenders."
CBS News rode along with Little's team as dusk fell on poor neighborhoods of vacant lots and high anxiety.
"The gangs have lost their hierarchy, so to speak, and without a chain of command, there's really nobody keeping things in check," Little said. The leaders are mostly in prison -- or dead. Those left are young, reckless, and often terrible shots.

"Instead of a bullet with somebody's name on it, we have a bullet that reads 'To whom it may concern,'" Little said. The result is a spate of shootings that have killed or wounded young children, even toddlers
The victims include 7-year old Heaven Sutton, at left, shot to death selling candy outside her house. Ten-year old Kitanna Peterson, at left, was playing by a fire hydrant when she was shot last week. A stray bullet went through her wrist and abdomen.
"We care about the grandmother that lives in the Graystone who's raising her grandkids. We care about the guy who's a hard-working stiff who gets up in the morning and works two jobs," Little said.
The police are also establishing a data base gleaned from interviews with the gang members themselves -- on their whereabouts, grudges or habits -- to anticipate trouble before it erupts. Some businesses that serve as hideouts will also be shuttered.
Little responds to a man with a gun call. In just two hours, we witnessed repeated stops, searches and arrests.
"They are smart enough and savvy enough to have people run interference, to have plausible stories, to have a whole system of things they can bring up to try to interfere with us doing our jobs," Little said. "They know we're out there and that has an effect on what they're willing to do."
He sees the same people "all the time."
Sgt. Little is a decorated veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan. He said that parts of Chicago are comparable to what he saw in combat.
It's "tribal warfare," he said, "and as it continues to build unless we manage to interdict it, and manage to stop it long enough for the blood to stop boiling, the heat to die down."

Better there than here, and I include the innocents caught in the crossfire as well. While people (including myself) rail against welfare parasites, those children caught in the crossfire should serve as incredible motivation to get a job and get out of the welfare reservations.
The entertainment industry likes to mock stereotypical poor trailer park whites, but I don’t see them burying their children because of this savagery.

The whole neighborhood knows which kids belong to these gangs. If you were a part of the neighborhood you could ask any person there who shot who and when and get the answer, but of course they will not help the police.
In most communities 99% of the people are honest, hardworking, decent folks. In these neighborhoods about 25% are involved in the activity, 25% are on public assistance, and the other 50 % are decent hardworking victims.
And the whiny Mayor starts out wondering what can they learn from the value system of the gangs. That interview was the perfect example of a socialist liberal without a clue.

Here in NJ the neighborhoods where this happens have nearly 100% welfare recipients; most people with the lowest-paying jobs can avoid living there. They are areas completely composed of government housing, and the idle “youth” (both genders, ranging in age from 13 to 30) are heavily engaged in the activity.
In most of the communities infected with gang problems, the number one concern among many of the residents (and almost all their political leaders) is abuses by law enforcement officers - those folks will complain about the mayhem caused by the gangs, but that worry is secondary to the indignation of many (not all) that their “kids” might get pushed around by the cops. All one has to see is the way relatives of these slime react when those thugs are busted to realize that’s true.
And until that attitude turns around, don’t expect any improvement in the war zone that is Chicago’s inner city.
Chicago has no monopoly on the gang warfare that is going on in every large and medium city in the US. You could read the online paper of any city, on any given night and it’s the same thing.
It’s a direct result of the unwinnable, unsustainable drug war and the cultural mores of those involved.
Those gang members are set to become the wandering gangs or foot soldiers should someone organize them, that will emerge with the inevitable collapse of the United States.
This won’t stop unless they start killing the liberal elites and invade the protected enclaves.
I have two lifelong conspiracy theories. One is that the Saudis fund the “environmental” movement to keep us from developing energy resources.
The other is that the gangs are protected because drug money is flowing to politicians in these cities.
Certainly the gang theory is based on a long standing tradition in America.
Strange how there is no mention of illegal aliens and their part in the gang warfare.

It's almost like the entertainment and media are a hostile alien elite waging a mind war against mainstream America and the values that made us great. One has to wonder "why"? How does pulling down the society that supports you benefit anyone?
