Bob Kerrey's wife, Sarah Paley, rues his political career, disses Nebraska in Vogue essay
The Washington Post ^ | July 10,2012 | The Reliable Source

Here’s an interesting twist on the adoring political spouse: Does it matter to voters if a wife or husband really, really doesn’t want to be part of the campaign?

The former “Saturday Night Live” writer, 55, met the glamorous bachelor in 1995 when he was still in office. The two fell in love and then “I lured him to my hometown, New York City, when he decided not to run again,” she wrote. They married in 2001 and settled in Greenwich Village where they’ve raised their son Henry, now 10.

Describing herself as “secretive” and “so private,” Paley said she doesn’t much like politics — or anything that requires social interaction. (“My idea of a good time is when people cancel.”) What do you think about Nebraska, Ms. Paley? “The Midwest is a strange land for an Easterner of my ilk,” she wrote, describing anti-abortion billboards and the deer carcasses her son frolics among. Oh, and take note, Cornhuskers: She doesn’t like football.

Is this Paley being funny? Or is it — as some critics suggested — a condescending, East Coast put-down? A few Nebraskans noted that her essay wasn’t written for voters, but for Vogue, for whom she posed wearing a Narciso Rodriguez dress and Manolo Blahnik heels.

We reached out to Paley, who did not respond to requests for comment. Kerrey told the Omaha World-Herald that while it might appear his wife is “making fun of Nebraskans,” she is just a comedian trying for laughs.

Kerry has always been P-whipped. Back when he was gov. of nebraska, he was running around with Debra Winger (remember her?). She got stopped driving drunk in the governor’s limo, but of course got off.

What is it about politicians named Kerry and their even worse wives?

Second question: anyone like the country western song, Flyover States?

All the same, she has about as much in common with the average Nebraskan as a Dallas Millionaire I know has in common with Joe Kennedy. East is east and West is west, and never the twains shall meet. An exception seems to be Warren Buffet, who seems to work with religious zeal to seem middle-class.

Omaha is a great town. I could live there except for the winters.

I am really from Connecticut, but moved to northwest Illinois ... NOT to be confused with Chicago. My county voted against Obama in ‘08. It is definitely the midwest. I mainly miss New Haven pizza, and I don’t think I’ll ever be a real midwesterner, but I am happy to be here. When I go back to CT, the good people left look and act quiescent and defeated.

Is it not so that Dick Cavett and Marlon Brando were raised in Nebraska?

This woman sounds like a snob. And she said all of this stuff for the record?

Hah! I’d love to hear Mr. Kerrey’s reaction to this Vogue piece. The true reaction.

My husband lived in CT his entire life until 4 years ago and except for the time he did in USMC. He seems to be happy in the midwest, but does miss many elements of New England. (and he sometimes talks funny) But we have been lucky that many Yankees games have been on TV here this year, and of course his Giants won the super bowl.

He has been gone from Nebraska long enough for a whole generation to not remember him or know who he is/was, and for their parents to have evolved into a higher level of conservatism by now.

“Is she related to the Paley that used to run CBS?”

####

Highly likely. Her coastal elitist attitude is in the genes.

CBS had a stable of highly successful “rural comedies” in the late sixties. For no known reason at the time, Paley pulled the plug on all of them.

It turns out, Mrs. Paley didn’t like them; intimations that the down home humor from her husband’s network was embarrassing for her among her unaccomplished, neurotic idle, rich Manhattan friends.

Just so you know, not all Connecticut Yankees are Yankee (or Red Sox) fans. I come from a long line of National League devotees, and see no reason not to root for the Dodgers despite O'Malley's wicked act of moving Da Bums to Brooklyn. BlackElk, however, is a CT to midwest transplant who is a Yankee fan.

(and he sometimes talks funny)

My Canadian wife and I had a flurry of dictionary wars, mainly in the early years of our marriage. I still cannot persuade her to pronounce aunt as "ŏnt" with a short o sound, instead of "ănt" with a short leg (like the industrious insect).

One other problem in the midwest ... it seems next to impossible to get Pop Tarts without frosting on them.

Who cares if she doesn’t like football? It’s her POS, worthless democrat husband who is running and without her statement little bob didn’t have a sideways chance in hell.

I don’t give a rat’s ass about football either and I’m a longtime Nebraska resident and graduate of UNL. Bad hair ben made democrats a curse word for most Nebraskans.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rural_purge
The purge was instigated by CBS executive Fred Silverman,[citation needed] following research highlighting the greater attraction to advertisers of the younger urban viewer demographic.[1] Their lack of relevance was referred to in Gil Scott-Heron’s 1970 spoken-word piece The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, which alludes to at least seven of the shows that are eventually canceled as part of the purge, mentioning that as part of the titular revolution, the shows “will no longer be so damned relevant.”
