Civil Disobedience: Dallas Gay Couple Arrested after being denied marriage license

An image that could easily be mistaken for coming out of St. Petersburg, Russia has emerged from Dallas, Texas, where a couple was arrested for attempting to obtain a marriage license. Details follow.

Mark "Major" Jiminez and Beau Chandler were lead out of the Dallas County Clerk's Office on Thursday in handcuffs. The couple applied for a marriage license and refused to leave the office after being denied based on their sexual orientation.

The Dallas Voice reports:

Once in the license bureau on Thursday afternoon, Chandler and Jiminez filled out the paperwork. Chandler crossed out the word “bride” and wrote “not applicable.”

Before being called to the counter, the couple sat waiting next to a straight couple also applying for a license. Jiminez explained to them why they were there, and the couple wished them luck.

“God bless you,” Regina Johnson said to Jiminez and Chandler. “Good luck. You’re in our prayers.”

Clerk’s assistant Melinda Saavedra called Jiminez and Chandler and asked for their IDs. She checked to make sure one wasn’t there as a proxy.

“We pointed out subsection B that invalidates all marriages,” Chandler said. He was referring to the constitutional amendment that bans same-sex marriage in Texas. “She got teary-eyed when I said we love each other and want to get married.”

The couple then handcuffed themselves to each other and took a seat on the floor of the office where the reminded journalists about the many rights heterosexual couples receive with marriage that are denied to same-sex couples.

"This is about not being treated equal," Jiminez told reporters on hand.

The couple was then lead out of the office by police and arrested.

While the exact charges the men face are unclear, if prosecuted for criminal trespassing they risk 180 days in jail and a hefty fine.

Such strategic acts of "civil disobedience" hearken back to San Francisco 2003-04, are given America's history are irresistible to thousands.

I have no doubt in my mind that this is an orchestrated strategic campaign which will be aped by many in the months to come.

I don’t think they were denied a marriage license on the basis of their sexual orientation, but rather because they were both men.

If a lesbian and a male homosexual had turned up wanting to marry each other for whatever reason, say so she could get on his health care coverage or vice-versa, Texas would surely have let them wed.

This is the equivalent of a ten year old going to the DMV and demanding a license. Your request is not within the limits of the law. If you don’t like the limits of the law, go to the legislature and get it changed, put pressure on your representatives to change it. This is how laws are amended and repealed in a republic, the same way they were made.

According to the story, they put the handcuffs on themselves. When you first read it it sounds like the police must have handcuffed them - journalistic "lying by omission".

they were not denied because of their personal sex fetish behaivior. They were denied because of genetics.

I bet this was a tresspass arrest.

whatever organization set this up should also be charged.

after being denied based on their sexual orientation. ... Chandler and Jiminez filled out the paperwork. Chandler crossed out the word “bride”...

They were not denied based on "sexual" orientation. If either one of them had brought along a willing bride as required by Texas law then they could have been married. It's that simple. Any adult may get married in the USA, including homosexuals, they just have to follow the law.

Excellent comments, all; and what is so INFURIATING about this very strategic and carefully crafted photo and press opportunity, is that it will in fact tug at the heart strings and “sense of decency” of many dim witted Americans, who cannot think for themselves and have never heard of a con job.

Yes, similar to a 10 year old - or how about a 95 year old partially blind person - demanding their “right” to a driver’s license, and then being led out of DMV by police.

I find the culture war over same sex marriage and the latter’s agenda to be extremely relevant and important to the cultural and social direction of this nation. My purview sees effects for youth and coming generations, and for the damage which can be done on a far broader level, with its far reaching implications, and consequences which are not easily undone. I think social conservatism will still do much in the coming years regarding change and reversal. Or do you think its not an important issue, or that ignoring it is the best response?

But to liberals, laws are NOT made that way. To liberals, any law or policy they consider unjust should be changed because, well, just because.

What sort of babble are you peddling. You post some non-story, printed in a queer publication and that’s supposed to somehow elevate discourse?

They were not arrested for “trying to get a marriage license”, they were arrested for criminal trespass after they handcuffed THEMSELVES to the chairs and refused to leave.

I hope they serve the full 180 days

I bet this was a tresspass arrest.

I believe that most States have laws against interfering with official business. That & a disorderly conduct charge would be the most likely way that this silliness would be handled in Ohio.

Pointing out examples of the breakdown, not only in social values, but even in the perception of what is acceptable or rational discourse, is significant in encouraging analytic thought. Frankly, if nothing else, this illustrates what I have referred to as a "spreading contagion" from the Leftist propensity to pursue cloud or airborne wish lists.

See, for more on the subject, Cloud Dancing Revisited.

If this was merely an isolated case of two very, very mixed up individuals making a delusional statement, it would indeed by a "non-story." But placed into the context of what is going on all over the Western World, it is something quite different.

“...a couple was arrested for attempting to obtain a marriage license.”

Not true. They were arrested for their disorderly conduct after their unlawful petition was politely denied.

I do not believe it is a “non story”; I think it is a tendency or trending development: It is to be taken within the broader context of other stories posted. And yes, queer publications are often the best place to look for stories which pertain to the same sex marriage agenda. As a writer I receive new stories from subscriptions from far right, conservative, Christian, Libertarian, neo-conservative, liberal, and gay publications on my news feed as a matter of course.

Yes, the point is to facilitate discourse, which it has in fact done. If you find it meaningless, then simply ignore it.

Thank you for that, William; I have gone to that link in the past and find the writings extremely informative and provocative. I agree that to ignore this agenda and its social implications is to remain willfully blind and willfully uninformed.

If you paid attention to my own feedback and to the remarks of others, the point of posting this piece is to make social conservatives aware of what strategies the homosexual agenda is using, and how they are effecting the general culture. Not exactly meaningless, and I think this forum is certainly a place for such.
