Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

One of the greatest compliments one can pay an artist is to hear a song and say, "that sounds like..." Steve Winwood is one of those unique artists. Even when he was just starting out in the early 60s, emulating Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Jackie Wilson he sounded like Stevie. When he took on Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Elmore James and John Lee Hooker he still sounded like Stevie. Though the years his trademark sound has remained constant and recognizable over a 50-year career of ever-changing Blue-eyed Soul, British Blues, psychedilic Rock, 80s Pop, fusion Jazz, New Wave and Celtic music. Steve may be one of the most under-rated musicians of the last half-century. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 (as a founder of Traffic) and in 2005, was honoured as a Broadcast Music International Icon at the annual BMI London Awards for his "enduring influence on generations of music makers." In 2008, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Winwood #33 in its 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and he has won numerous Grammy Awards in the United States including Record of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. He has also been inducted into the Nashville "Walk of Fame".
Steve often shares the stage with Eric Clapton, touring with him and even more often showing up as a surprise guest and vise versa. Winwood has become a fixture at Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festivals, sharing the stage durring Eric's finales to benifit the Crossroads Centre, a drug and alcohol addiction rehabilitation facility located on the Caribbean island of Antigua, founded by Clapton in 1997. The following songs are live performances of Steve and Eric playing some old favorites at The Crossroads Festivals and from shows at Madison Square Garden in 2009.

This week has been a great ride buckaroos, I really enjoyed sharing some of Steve Winwood's legacy. As he and Mr. Slowhand play me out, I'll say I won't be around next weekend because of prior commitments, but, I'll try to return real soon. In the meantime a very good night to you, happy FReeping, God bless and as always ... I'll see you in church.
