Best Buy plans to lay off 1,800 store employees and 600 Geek Squad workers, according to a source at the company. The 2,400 cuts represent 1.4 percent of the company's 167,000 workforce and come on top of jobs associated with store closings the company announced previously.

I rest my case.
That same USB cable can be bought on the internet for less than a buck shipped...
I buy very little local. I order all my patch cables and other networking stuff from monoprice.com
I have not checked lately but HDMI cables where less than 2 bucks.
They can start with the Geeks that aren’t really so Geeky.
exactly!! they hawk those 90 dollar monster cables there and you can get the same thing at monoprice for 3 dollars.
that said, I did buy a flat screen there years ago and I was happy with the experience.
They will start with the Geekiest of the bunch. The ones that “cost to much”
Didn’t another large electronics retailer do this with their sales staff??
(it didn’t work out to well for them)
Walmart is also cutting in to best buys market.
Yep! This is true. Same thing happening with book stores. And now that everyone has smart phones, they can walk into a best Buy, Barnes and Noble, etc., play with the items, flips through a few pages and then scan the barcode and order it right there on line.
Surprised to read they're laying off Geek Squad employees though. I thought I read on another article that GS was the one part of Best Buy that's raking in a profit.
Anyways, I spent $1400 in Best Buy last weekend. I could've bought my purchases cheaper on line but I like Best Buy and don't want to see them go out of business. And I suspect the people who use BB as Amazon's showroom will be pretty bummed as well when they shutter their stores.
Just don’t ever buy the Micro Center extended warranty. Suddenly, you will discover, any problem with your purchased equipment is YOUR fault and the warranty you paid hundreds of dollars for will not be honored. Having had that pulled on me twice after many years and many thousands of dollars spent at Micro Center, I will no longer set foot in their store.
I think the only way Best Buy survives is to spin off the Geek squad unit into cheaper/smaller real estate, and give up big box stores and go online just like Amazon.
I make the association because digital photography, brought to the forefront mainly by Gates and Jobs, killed both companies. With the advent of digital technology Polaroid and Kodak, which once had a mere handful of serious competitors, found themselves competing with Sony,Panasonic and other corporate giants in addition to their earlier competitors.Likewise,Best Buy,which originally had,at most,a handful of competitors in a given region, found themselves competing, thanks to the internet, with hundreds of firms in each region they served.
And you're correct about Dr Land.My Dad answered directly to him and routinely gushed with praise about the man's brilliance. He also came to my Mom's funeral which,I've always felt, was indicative of a man of exceptional dignity and thoughtfulness.
I suspect that yours is the exception to the rule. The one near me,in the last year or two,is looking more and more like a ghost town while I'm browsing.
There's a lot of truth to that. Televisions are no longer the big profit items they once were and the consumer technology market has shifted to smartphones. Those huge stores are now a liability.
That maybe used to be their business model, but they no longer do the second paragraph. They don’t have the lowest prices, and more importantly often don’t have it in stock. I’ve given up on BB because the last 3 times I wanted something there they didn’t have it and when I wandered into Target looking for completely other stuff they had what I was looking for at BB for less than BB listed on their web page.
Which is of course why they’re going out of business. Not only do they have a crappy dishonest business model, they aren’t even doing it well anymore.
Do you suppose 0bama will use this on the campaign trail?
I have to say that Best Buy is the worst place to shop for electronics (even if my driver (Matt Kenseth) gets sponsored by them). Rude sales people...
Bad Management, not Obama fault this time!!
My limited experience with the Geek Squad is that they don’t have any geekiest. Amateurs with attitude is what they are.
Yup.. When I run out of something in my van.. like say a power supply and microcenter is to far away I like to go to BB and play stump the geek. Normally it’s not to hard to do while there to get the power supply I need.
No I don’t need it installed, no I don’t need the extended warranty, No I don’t need a credit card..
No really. I don’t need any of those things.
I think the only way Best Buy survives is to spin off the Geek squad unit into cheaper/smaller real estate, and give up big box stores and go online just like Amazon.
That won’t work. I’m in the mobile tech field. My field is exploding with companies offering pre-paid computer repair. You pay a small monthly fee (8-20 bucks I think it is ) and if you have a problem with your computer they dispatch me to your home. Many companies also offer flat rate or or hourly one time visit repairs.
I also do warranty repairs for Dell/HP/Acer.. If you had the option of paying about the same amount to have your computer repaired in home as in store what would you choose?
They should get rid of all of the Greeks, they’re a bunch of bastards and they’re killing the finances of Germany.
“Do you think their support of CAIR has anything to do with falling revenues?”
In a word, NO! The vast majority of people have no idea who CAIR is, and most that do know who they are don’t really cair, like me.
Until we are able to ORGANIZE, what we think won’t matter.
I bought a P.C. at Best Buy several years ago, it came with rebate papers, I hate rebates and they told me if I had any problem dealing with the rebate, they would help me out.
Guess what? I didn’t get the rebate, so I go back to Best Buy and they tell me, “not our problem”. After another 3 months or so, I learned why I didn’t get the rebate, someone else already got it. Beast Buy had sold me a returned, used computer as a new one.
Only after going into the store and making a loud scene did the manager replace my comp with a new one. Screw Best Buy.
They still honor their 30 day pricing guarantee. At least they did it for me...
