Harvard has appointed Vanidy Van Bailey as the Colleges first permanent director of bisexual, gay, lesbian, transgender, and queer student life. Bailey, the assistant director for education at the University of California, San Diego, will assume the new position on July 16.
Last April, Dean of the College Evelynn M. Hammonds announced her intention to hire a full-time staffer dedicated to serving the BGLTQ community on campus.
In a statement to students, Hammonds said that the decision was based on recommendations made by the BGLTQ Working Group, which she created in October 2010 to evaluate BGLTQ experiences and needs at the College.
In an email, Bailey expressed excitement for connecting with BGLTQ students and staff at Harvard and said that the first task for the new director would be setting goals for the upcoming academic year.
At UCSD, Bailey oversees programs at the BGLTQ Resource Center and advises student organizations.
In September 2011, the College announced that Lisa Lee Forest of Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts would be its first director of BGLTQ student life. However, one month later, Forest turned down the position at Harvard for personal and professional reasons.

CORRECTION: July 3
An earlier version of this article used the pronoun "she" to refer to Vanidy "Van" Bailey, the newly appointed director of bisexual, gay, lesbian, transgender, and queer student life. In fact, Bailey prefers not to be referred to by any gendered pronoun.

“Bailey prefers not to be referred to by any gendered pronoun.”
Shouldn’t the response to that be “too friggin bad”? Maybe I want to be referred to as a malomar.
And we even have to discuss the obvious fact liberals do nothing but waste money on insane leftist projects?
“This reads like a parody...”
Whaddya mean ‘reads like’? This had better be a parody, or the American Academy has truly somersaulted into the abyss of nihilism. This must be a parody. Surely to God!
I’m sick and tired of all this GLBT crap.
I don’t give a flying fig what people do in the privacy of their own homes, but I do wonder why some people seem to think I need to hear about it constantly.
Its not an issue of equal protection under the law anymore, its OMG LOOKIT ME IM GAY!! GAY I TELL YOU!!
Erm.. yeah, we get it.
“One wonders why college tuition costs continue to explode when school create more and more BS administrators who never set foot inside a classroom.”
###
For many “professors” setting foot inside a classroom is to be avoided whenever possible.
Univeristy staffs could EASILY be halved, across the board, without anyone noticing.
In fact, Bailey prefers not to be referred to by any gendered pronoun.
Of course it doesn’t!
So is it the “B”, the “G”, the “L”, the “T” or the “Q”?
What are you besides a “D” for disgrace!?!
Sorry, but mayonaisse is for homos. Healthy people prefer horseradish :-)
What you are seeing here is an example of the coalition's ongoing conquest of the United States. To the victors belong the spoils.
If I can wake up and decide that I’m a woman, despite all physical evidence, and force others to treat me as a woman by power of law,...
Then why can’t I say that I’m black and demand to be treated as a protected class???
Why don’t they simpify the name and just call it the Freak Show?
The letter “T” may have multiple meanings. You never know.
Wow, talk about awkward wording!
Oh, you have Ethnic Identity Disorder too? Let’s demand to use the Colored Only rest room.
BGLTQ?
WTFIGO? ITEOTWAWKI! LMAO.
I’m offended that you refer to it as a disorder. I’ve always known I was black. Even as a child playing cowboys and indians, I would hold my cap pistols flat on their sides and pretend that I was being oppressed.
“I wish the “Gay rights” groups would settle on initials for their movement. I’ve heard GLBT, LGBT, GLBTQ, BGLTQ, etc.”
I was thinking the same thing. Does this mean we can now call them what they really are without being arrested for a “hate crime”?
