DOJ lawsuit: Physical test for police officers discriminates against women
Washington Examiner ^ | 7/3/12 | Joel Gehrke

The Corpus Christi, Tex. Police Department has found itself on the business end of a civil rights lawsuit after the Justice Department concluded that a physical ability test used when considering job applications discriminates against women. As a condition for employment, new applicants must pass a physical ability test (PAT) involving: pullups, a 300-meter run, a 1.5 mile run, and sit-ups. Only 19 percent of female applicants passed this test between 2005 and 2009, compared to 63 percent of men, the DOJ complaint records. The Justice Department says that the test discriminates

I looked up the test standards. Laughable. If you can't pass this test, you aren't physically capable of watching TV.

22 pushups (not pull ups, as indicated in the article)
25 situps in 1 minute
300-meter run in 66 seconds
1.5-mile run in 15:37

The military had the same problem, and first tried to deal with it by lowering standards, which was a mess and reduced military readiness.

So they came up with a better way of doing business: delay new recruits for some months, while offering them the equivalent of a “physical prep school” to achieve physical standards. This works in several ways.

To start with, there are recruits who are just unmotivated and/or in bad physical condition. Even with a few months of lead time they either can’t, or won’t, physically improve themselves enough to pass standards. And this can cover the gamut to include abnormal weight, lack of strength and stamina, and health problems.

But there are many recruits of both sexes who are physically fit enough to pass but not to do well, and this prep time strongly raises the standards of recruits.

If they wash out of this very relaxed training, they would have never made it through real training. But the emphasis is not to wash them out, but to get them up to standards.

Importantly, training is not co-ed, so female recruits have female trainers who can perform to standards, plus they have far less sympathy for female recruits who slack off and make the other females look bad.

This prep training is also individual oriented, because new recruits have such different needs in getting prepared. A recruit who is physically a mess at the start but is almost up to standards because they are very motivated will be a better performer than one who just passes but makes no effort to do any more than just pass.

Sounds to me like perhaps those taking it are simply a bit too lazy to do what it takes to get into peak physical condition.

Oh yeah!

Recruits (police, military, whatever) who are coddled and babied at the outset to get them up to minimal training input standards, will be the first to quit when it gets tough in real life on the job.

Opinion of a former Navy frogman.

This is my hometown. I once tried to join the CCPD. I had just come off Active Duty Air Force. I passed all the test and made it all the way to the phsyc eval. I found out that the phsycologist do not have a sense of humor. Do not say “Kill them all and let God sort the out”. This will kill an interview real quick.

Hey if they want women then the tests should be fair.My sister was one of 13 who tried to take the Lieutenant's test for Police Officer but was locked out.My sister was the first woman to run on the Police department ticket. What did it get her nothing.I support these women.

So what if it does? If the test measures the kind of normal physical/activity an officer could expect to do, chasing a suspect, etc, it is testing on ability to do physical requirements of the actual job.

It’s like saying computer programming discrimnates against women because math is hard.

And what percentage of women passing would it have to be to make it not discriminatory? They say nothing about that. Also they don’t care about any of the guys who couldn’t pass.

Women cops could potentially escalate and kill more people as being female, smaller and weaker, in general, they’d be forced to rely more on a firearm than male cops.

Sad part is, one day one of these “affirmative action” candidates is going to get killed because she couldn’t perform her job. And in the process she is going to get her partner killed also.

Then what happens?

Nothing, probably.

I’m almost 60 and in the process of losing 40 pounds; and I could meet those standards with two weeks of working out.

Some are lesbian and want to be able to legally harass men.

Some are libs and think they can do any job a man can do,but better.

Some have something to prove.

Some want union bennies.

Some believe life is Charlie’s Angels / Heather Locklear in TJ Hooker.

Some really want to be cops and can actually do the job.

Not to mention the almost 40 percent of ment who couldn’t pass the test. Nobody cares when a guy can’t pass a test. If we treated all folks equally in this country, nobody’d care if women or fags or minorities couldn’t pass a test, either.

I am not in great shape but I could easily pass this test. I/can do the push up and situps and sprint, and I can jog 6 miles an hour no problem.

My grandmother could pass that. Seriously, if you cannot pass that, please find some other way to protect and serve your community.

A dog could do better for protecting the public.

She was holding the perp in check while the other cop cuffed. This is so the perp knows that if he tries an evasive maneuver, his goose is cooked. I guess she has a nervous twitch. Most cops carry Glocks which don’t have ‘hair triggers’ so she must’ve pulled hard.
