Jacksonville, FL —

A man who flagged down Jacksonville police to report a shooting also said he thought he was responsible.

An off-duty officer was flagged down Saturday around 3:30 AM by a man who says someone tried to rob him. He says they got into a gun battle and he believed he shot the robber.

Police found a deceased black man behind a house at W 13th Street and Thames Avenue. He appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound and there was a hand gun lying next to the man.

A witness says he was sitting in a car with the shooter when a man approached with a gun and demanded money. The witness fled but as he did so heard gun shots.

The shooter had a concealed weapons permit and turned his weapon over to police.

It is a good idea to have spare firearms. You do not want to be left defensless immediately after a shooting. Criminals have freinds, associates, family members, and gang members.

Police found a deceased black man

The ONLY thing that cuts down on the recidivism rate for career criminals. Crime isn't causted by poverty or lack of opportunity. It's caused by a lack of moral compass and a bone deep conviction that the criminal is owed by the rest of society. Those to lazy or to cowardly to steal on their own rely on the government to do it for them and distribute the loot via EBT cards.

“Good shooting, Citizen. Civilization thanks you.”

Exactly! One less a-hole out there to prey on others.

Why did he have to turn his gun over to the police?

That’s standard in the investigation.

It’d be great if the cops could give you a loaner while they have your gun as part of their investigation.

That doesn’t make sense to me, but whatever.

He does sound like a guy who has a spare or two, though.

That’s a law I could support. Maybe the usable firearms collected though buy backs could be sent to police departments that had loaner programs. The best part is it would really piss some folks off.

If the cops confiscate your property, especially if it is property that is used for your personal protection, why not have a loaner until the investigation and any court proceedings conclude?

Sure, a number of people own multiple firearms but for those that only own that one firearm and that one has been taken by the police I would not want to see them dis-armed.

That is a great idea! Like a rental car special for the weekend, ‘free bullets for killing any additional criminals in the act of violent lawbreaking’, you shoot enough of ‘em and you get a gift card.

"Why did he have to turn his gun over to police?"

Because it's evidence to be impounded till investigation and adjudication is completed in the case.

This doesn't necessarily mean he won't get his weapon back. Depends a lot on the political leanings in the jurisdiction, I suppose.

This is Jacksonville, Florida, hometown of the Zimmerman prosecutor. So, the question is: was the shooter black? If he is white, I’d be worried if I was him.
