Although the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) strongly discourages spanking, at least half of parents admit to physically punishing their children. Some research suggests that as many as 70-90 percent of mothers have resorted to spanking at one time or another. A new study published in the journal Pediatrics may cause parents to think more carefully before laying a hand on their little ones.
Researchers examined data from more than 34,000 adults and found that being spanked significantly increased the risk of developing mental health issues as adults. According to their results, corporal punishment is associated with mood disorders, including depression and anxiety, as well as personality disorders and alcohol and drug abuse. They estimate that as much as 7 percent of adult mental illness may be attributable to childhood physical punishment, including slapping, shoving, grabbing, and hitting. The study reports that spanking ups the risk of major depression by 41 percent, alcohol and drug abuse by 59 percent, and mania by 93 percent, among other findings.

Oh; the look that comes across their face!
2 Kings 2:23-24 (KJV)
And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.
And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.
An eight foot hose of heavy rubber used to connect the vacuum to the milking machines. When doubled it made a very fine whip.
Does she still wear braces??
Point taken, thanks.
Exactly, this study shows correlation, but not causality. To show causality there’d have to be a long term study employing the scientific method ... including the use of a control group.
This is something taught starting in 6th and 7th grade science. Or at least was when I was growing up in the early 80s. This shows that people are really ignorant, and that the scientific community understands that they’re ignorant.
Meanwhile, I’m sure that kids growing up with 2 fathers or 2 mothers produces perfectly normal adults. /sarc
So just because Scientologits speak out against psychiatry, then any opinions that may have a superficial resemblance to theirs (but actually share no commonality) are wrong, and psychiatry is OK? How many times has the DSM been altered over the years? Psychiatry is just as much of witchcraft as L. Ron’s cult.
I won't disagree.
Talking with ANYONE about yer problems will work - no need for a shrink.
“Shame on you, Bully!”
Yea, it sure was fun. I just miss doing it over and over again. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to see my kid suffer, for I am one of those parents that believe in corporal punish...something you obviously do not understand.
This should have been resolved at 41 MONTHS not years!! The most vile, nasty, aggressive, violent children I have experienced (all in the last 9 years or so) are the ones who were never spanked. The government through various busy body agencies such as Child Protective Services have outlawed ALL correction whether verbal or corporal as “abuse.” Whereas “diagnosing” children’s outbursts and handy them a bunch of mind bending, health endangering pills is NOT abuse. My husband’s ex-wife is a CPS worker and she is probably the worst mother on the face of this earth (I’m a successful parent with two grown children, one married for over 8 years now, the other in the Air Force). She beFRIENDS her children but does not PARENT them. They are all on “meds” for various “ailments” such as phoney “learning disabilities” (read: Mom doesn’t put her boot up their arses), failing school (all three of them and not just “F” failing, Marianas Trench failing and skipping school) and headed for a life of felonious activity, teen pregnancy and drug abuse. It’s very sad when parents abdicate their parental responsibilty and make their children their equals or worse yet superiors.
CPS is merely a tool for vindictive (usually) mothers to get back at fathers for daring to move on after they divorce/dump said fathers. Dad doesn’t DARE train/instruct/correct his children on his ‘parenting time’ should she be magnanimous as court-appointed parental sovreign, enough not to thwart it. REAL child abuse is seldom if ever investigated. To do so is too politically incorrect and dangerous (involves venturing into minority communities).
