..All vehicles travelling on French roads must carry a chemical or electronic breathalyzer test beginning Sunday, under new rules aimed at reducing alcohol-driven accidents.
"Alcohol has been the main cause of mortality on roads since 2006," according to road security authorities.
About a third of fatalities on French roads is due to drink driving, a rate that far surpasses the 17 percent recorded in Britain or 10 percent in Germany.
According to a survey published Sunday, just over half of respondents -- 57 percent -- said they have yet to equip their vehicles with breathalyzer tests.
Those who fail to do so risk a fine of 11 euros ($14) from November 1, 2012, when the penalty comes into force.
Drivers are split over the measure.
"I find it absurd to be booked for that. But it's the law, so I'll be subject to it," said Hamou Louachiche, 38, who still does not have a test in his car.
He believes that such tests would be more useful in bars or nightclubs.

Is it a penalty or a tax?
I have a get rich quick idea.
“Fresh Breath in a can” - $9.99 for a 5 shot container.
If a third of all French highway fatalities are due to drunk driving, doesn’t it follow that two-thirds of all fatalities are due to sober driving? Why not mandate drinking before driving as a panacea for all fatalities? A fifth of Jack Daniels in every trunk!
How in the hell is that going to work they are stinky people to begin with
As obamma advisor Valerie Jarrett says: ‘It does not matter what you call it, as long as it becomes law!’.
Well, that’s one way to cut down on Foreign Oil costs.........
if one third of fatalities are caused by drunk drivers, how about the other TWO THIRDS caused by SOBER drivers? seems to me that they shoul dbe looking at them SOBER drivers first!
Liberal logic, eh? I think they are trying to reduce the overall number of fatalities. I could be wrong. But by your logic random missle attacks on the highways could also reduce the % of fatalities due to drunk driving.
After 8 or so shots of tequila I’m sure your first thought as you poured yourself into yor car would be to take the breathalyzer test. LOL!!!
yet only one third is caused by drunk drivers .....
Am I missing something here? Is the authorities saying the definition of 'drunk' driving is too high?
So...if you kill someone with drunk driving and don’t have the test in your car you’ll be fined $14 in addition to the homicide charge?
The “test” can’t possibly prevent you from starting the vehicle, they can’t all be installed this quickly. So how many will actually bother to take one before turning the key?
This elevates “idiocy” to a whole new level. Even for the Frehch.
It would however make driving more interesting.
I didn’t read this article, but I read about the law last year or so. It’s not an ignition interlock. They just have to carry a disposable breathalyzer-type device to use upon request. Just my understanding and recollection . . .
How soon before balloon like kits that fit over the mouthpiece that you breath into before you drink are on the market?
Then you just blow it up before you drink, before you drive, hook it up to the mouthpiece, turn a valve and your car starts.
I wonder how sensitive it is? Will a compressor that puts out the volume of air a human puts out work or does it also look for other byproducts of human respiration.
Ohhhhhhhh
Froggy went a-drinkin’ and he did drive, a-huh.

Proving she is a better legal scholar than Roberts.
But, I thought the French could “hold” their liquor because they are introduced to it as children ;^) At least that was what I’ve always been told by liberals....
No religious exemptions?
What they really need is a deodorant detector
