WASHINGTON, June 30 (Reuters) - Nearly 4 million homes and businesses were without power on Saturday amid a record heat wave in the eastern United States after deadly thunderstorms downed power lines from Indiana to New Jersey. At least 11 people were killed.
Statewide emergencies were declared in Washington D.C., Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia because of damage from overnight storms, which brought hurricane-force winds along a 500-mile (800-km) stretch.
Forecasters predicted more severe thunderstorms as renewed heat blanketed the area on Saturday.
Utilities or state emergency agencies reported the following outages and damage:
- Maryland: About 869,000 customers without power with outages reported in every county.
- West Virginia: More than 600,000 customers without power.
- Ohio: Power out across two-thirds of state, about 1 million homes and businesses without electricity, and one storm-related death reported. Governor John Kasich said power could take a week to be restored fully.
- New Jersey: Atlantic County declared a state of emergency, and at least 206,000 customers were without power. Two cousins, aged 2 and 7, were killed by a falling tree in state park.
- District of Columbia: 67,000 power customers affected. State of emergency declared.
- Pennsylvania: 32,500 homes and businesses without power.
- Indiana: 135,000 customers with power lost.
- Kentucky: 187 customers without power.
- North Carolina: 618 homes and businesses with power lost.

I am one of these folks. It seems we will be without power for days. I am at work (off time) just to do some fun computer stuff (NOT GETTING PAID FOR IT).....Just to be clear. Anyway, I hope everyone is having a great weekend and that somehow someway everyone is staying safe.
Don’t get discouraged. A large caravan of electrical workers and trucks are heading north on I-77 to get your power back up. Also seeing a bunch of generators being hauled up there too. Hang in there.
That was a VERY powerful storm. And quick. My son, seeing all the lightning flashing all over the place, said, “We’re gonna get hammered, Dad.” I replied, “I don’t know, Doggie, there’s no wind at all.” Literally 30 seconds later, my adirondacks were being blown all over the yard. Scary.
We didn’t even have storms here in southern Michigan and we had power outages 2 days in a row.
We better shut down some more coal fired plants.
Thanks....I hope that you are staying cool. I know I sounded sorta whiney, but really with the flooding in Pensacola and pan handle of Florida and the fires in Colorado, I really have zero reason to complain. Thank you for the post though...that is encouraging.
We were at Lowes in Galax, VA earlier today and met a man from WV who said they were expecting his power to be off for up to 2 weeks. He was looking for a generator and was told Lowes had sold out. . . everywhere.
I was at work and watched this thing move in. The clouds were very dark. At break time I walked out the door and I was out there about thirty seconds when it hit. The wind nearly blew me over and the rain came in sheets. I’m glad I wasn’t far from the door because the wind was sucking the air right out of me.
We have flowers in pots outside and one minute they were hanging , and the next they were flying thru the air like mussiles. The plants were literally ripped from their pots and sent flying. That is the darkest I have ever seen the clouds. Not a tornado, but furious all the same. Don’t mind saying I was scared for the first time in awhile.
Odd. I saw lots of lightning at a distance, and thought that it must be really nasty for people in that area. But our area remained almost unaffected, except for some wind. Even that wasn’t too bad... high wind always keeps me awake, and I slept just fine.
I guess we were lucky here.
My daughter and 2 G’daughters are some of the lucky ones. They live in Baltimore, and went thru those horrors last night, but were planning on coming here to No. NJ today. They arrived with most of the stuff that was in their refrig.!
Praying all of you folks get your power back on SOON. God bless you.
Good practice for life in the future after Zer0 gets rid of the rest of the coal powered power plants.
Guess that makes you Doggie Daddy?
I really hope John Roberts is taking this warning seriously.
Stay safe!
My son weathered the storm at a Boy Scout Summer Camp on the James River near Surry, VA. My wife and I were on our way to pick him up and had just pulled in to a hotel in Ashland when the wind kicked up. The storm winds moved in quickly and the torrential rain started before we could get into our room.
Our son and the other Scouts weathered the storm in the Cafeteria at the Camp and everyone was safe.
Today, we drove from there across VA to I-81 and are travelling south toward Mississippi. Power was out and hotels were packed all the way south to Pulaski. We finally found a hotel near Wytheville.
Have a very sick family member who has been severely impacted by this. Had no idea about this disruption in service.. So disgusted by SCOTUS ruling; have not listened/watched news, since that announcement. . .(Did finally notice this on Drudge Report; just as 'family' message came in.)
I stayed at that camp some 45 years ago.
Your logic is undeniable... :)
