A fast-moving line of dangerous storms knocked out power to more than 1.5 million customers in the D.C. area Friday night.

A day of record-shattering heat ended with severe thunderstorms that rushed through the metro area with strong winds and an impressive lightning display.

The storms produced hurricane-force winds in excess of 80 mph. Gusts of 82 mph were reported in the Reston area.

On Saturday morning, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management confirmed that four people had died due to the storm in the Commonwealth.

The National Weather Service reported a tree fell on a car in the area of Old Keene Mill Road and Bauer Drive in Springfield, Va. shortly before 11 p.m., killing 27-year-old Khiet Nguyen of Burke.

Most of Columbus Ohio lost power at 5 pm yesterday.

There was no rioting, looting, etc. People were observing all way stop at the not working traffic lights.

It was a nice test drill for Columbus and everyone passed with flying colors.

Of course if it went on a week or two who knows.

It took me about an hour to get my never used generator running. It had no oil and I had to boot my computer and download instructions on how to put oil in it. Used a Verizon mobile card for internet and had a fully charged laptop.

It was really nice to have that baby kick on and just having a fan and a 60 watt bulb burning just made me feel better all over.

If you can get ice, you need to put some in the refrig and make it into an old fashioned ice box.

It’s been 12 hours, where is the response from the federal government? (use the Dims Katrina rant on the current administration)

Our a/c frizzed out 2 days ago. Finally was fixed 15 minutes before the storm hit yesterday. Our power flickered and surged for a good while but stayed on. Our internet is still out. Local reports said some gusts were clocked at 80 mph. here in Ohio. Neighbors across the street are on a different grid and they lost power. We ran extension cords across the street to a couple of our neighbors to keep their fridges running. They have been told it could be 5-7 days before their power is restored.

Well Baltimore Gas and Electric is reporting “Nearly 420,000” people without power. So what happens in Baltimore with this heat and the power stays out?

Are these the same people that told us in case of

biological attack, days after 9-11, put polyurethane on our

windows?

We actually live about 50 miles North and avoid the Jersey Shore on Weekends.

Most of the Shore areas from Belmar down to Seaside are visited on the weekends from the Staten Island and the Brooklyn area residents.

Lots of developments for summer homes and rentals, as oppose to Jones' Beach and Robert Moses State Park on the South Shore of Long Island.

And it is an easier commute.

Established connection with my mother by cell phone just now. Signal drops out every 1-2 minutes. She’s unaware of the extent of the local problem. Refuses to even prepare to relocate. As I’ve heard from so many non-prepers over the years, “(Preps) What for? The power always comes back on.”

Any Freepers know of current situation Arlington specific?

What part of Arlington? It's a big place. I live in the Ballston neighborhood of Arlington - it's a high-rise apartment, so I have power, and cell and internet are fine. I don't have a landline though.

Pretty astounding storm when it came through though.
