If roadside bombs and other hazards of war don't kill military dogs, senseless government regulations and red tape might. The United States is breeding 100 puppies a year to train for bomb sniffing and other soldierly duties, but many aren't making it back to happy homes because an obscure federal law classifies them as "equipment" rather than personnel -- and makes adopting them a financial and bureaucratic nightmare. A bill to require that the military ship the heroic dogs home and ease potential veterinarian costs for adopting families is currently bogged down in Congress, as dogs continue to be euthanized. In the meantime, at least there is an occasional happy ending.

This is so shamefull. These 4 legged heroes deserve a good home with people to love them and pamper them.
I read over fifty years ago that military guard dogs were being euthanized after their trainer left the service.
According to that story, one dog responded to one man and no other so the dog was killed as it could not be given to a new guard.
But then that was fifty years ago.
Man was created in the image of God, and given dominion and stewardship over the earth and the creatures therein. It’s true that not everyone is a good steward. And perhaps the military has a pitiful record in this area. But neither irresponsible treatment of animals nor appreciation for them justifies elevating them to the status of human beings.
Killing animals is not “murder”. Dogs are not “veterans” any more than cannons are. They’re not “police officers” any more than squad-cars are. They’re not “personnel”. They’re not “soldiers”. They’re animals placed in our care and stewardship, to serve our needs.
God placed man and the animals in their proper place, and called it “good”. All this PETA-speak demeans both us and them.
Thank you for posting this, Shibumi!! *Some* of these 4 legged heroes have been adopted by their handlers, but if that isn’t going to happen, they should be available to rescue, at least. (If they’re considered “unadoptable” because of their expertise- & I don’t say that in jest, many recuses do have “retirees” who will spend the rest of their lives being cared for & loved by fosters. Which are *always* needed :-) hint hint )
One of the democrat Congressmen (I want to say Schumer?) helped save one of these dogs fairly recently. And Thad McCotter would be a good person to contact, if he isn’t already involved.
Please express your support for this bill! (Preaching to the choir, I know)
I am not concerned about how they are classified, only that they not be killed when their service is done.
We are definitely singing off the same page in the choir book.
“This is the problem we encounter. We have been pigeon holed by the MSM that all environmental, poverty, and women issues must belong to the Dhim; any animal issue pertains to PETA, labor to the unions, and so on. “
Indeed; those issues properly belong to conservatives; they are not “liberal” issues.
You might want to check out Scripture a bit more thoroughly before running with the idea that animals are there for us to treat any way we choose. Scripture says nothing of the kind. Stewardship means just that. There are numerous Scriptures which show that God has made a covenant with them as well — as in Genesis 9. There are other Scriptures showing that animals are important to God (too numerous to mention but you can google them).
I never will understand why some feel that their “special” relationship to God is somehow threatened by showing compassion to God’s other creatures. Such a mindset demeans mankind and does nothing to demonstrate compassion. No one here said anything about animals being human, but would I call an animal who had served faithfully and loyally a K9 officer or veteran? You bet! (And most who serve with them would as well, by the way!) Do they deserve something better than death at the end of their service? ABSOLUTELY!! But then that’s humanity for you — I’ll use you and then toss you aside like so much garbage because you’re not human. THAT is despicable and does NOT honor the God so many claim to serve.
If such a view offends you remember that you are always free to skip these threads on compassion for animals.
ABSOLUTELY!! And the wicked mindset that somehow the fact that they aren’t human excludes them from such consideration is all too prevalent on our side, sadly — as is evident from this thread (and virtually every other thread on animals.)
WELL SAID!! Dogs can be trained, which should be obvious from the rehabilitation of the Michael Vick fighting dogs. Only one was unable to be rehomed. Only one. Yes, it takes work and yes, it may be difficult at times, but the mindset that says “Oh, just kill them because it’s easier than working with them” is abhorrent.
Neither Vets, 4 legged or 2 legged, should be treated so poorly and dishonorably.
Neither Vets, 4 legged or 2 legged, should be treated so poorly and dishonorably.
The callous disregard for these animals simply shows a Socialist mindset that only what they deem is 'useful' should be kept, everything else is disposable.
When you use terms like “to serve our needs” the implication is there that they are for us to use as we see fit — whatever that means. If you don’t mean that, I’m glad to hear it, but these threads always get pounded by the “Why isn’t this thread about child abuse/abortion” crowd and it gets old. Animals were created for God’s pleasure — as are we, for that matter. We should never forget that.
It is indeed an evil mindset and should never find a willing proponent among conservatives. Just wicked.
Yeah, I figured you’d backtrack. (Considering the character of most FReepers, I anticipated an apology too. But oh well.)
Be more careful about misrepresenting people in the future. Shoehorning your opinions into others’ words is not honest discussion.
I did no such thing. Nor have I apologized, backtracked or anything else. My words stand. Be careful about misrepresenting and assumptions. (You know what they say about people who “assume”.) It is you who have inserted words into the mouths of others here by claiming that they have represented animals as humans. Nice to know you are backtracking.
BTW, by your apparent contempt of FReepers (”considering the character of most FReepers), it is odd in the extreme that you would continue to post here.
I think the bill in congress is to simplify and assist the process.
BTW, there are waiting lists to adopt these dogs.
