Obama's Big Political Win Sets Stage for More Battles
Wall Street Journal ^ | June 28, 2012 | CAROL E. LEE and NAFTALI BENDAVID

President Barack Obama won a monumental legal victory Thursday when the Supreme Court upheld the vast majority of his health-care law, but the fight for public opinion—and votes in November—showed signs of growing more heated.

Mr. Obama can argue that he has secured long-held Democratic goals: Expanding health insurance to millions of additional Americans and limiting the power of insurers to deny coverage. That could help the president motivate core parts of his party's base that he needs for re-election, including college-educated women, younger voters and minorities.

But the ruling is likely to re-energize Republicans, who swept to a majority in the House in 2010 partly by attacking the health law as government overreach. The court also handed the GOP a new cudgel: It upheld the law's central plank by calling it a permissible form of taxation, giving Mr. Obama's opponents ammunition to argue he has imposed a new tax.

Read a timeline of events surrounding President Barack Obama's health-care legislation, from the bill's path through Congress to the legal challenges. Looking Back: Health Care in America

Read about past efforts to change how Americans receive and pay for health care.

Declaring the law a tax increase sets the stage for a reignited debate over the proper size and role of government, which has deeply divided the two parties.

Mr. Obama declared the ruling a historic victory while also vowing to work to adjust it, in an apparent nod to the law's unpopularity among many Americans. "We will continue to implement this law, and we'll work together to improve on it where we can," he said. "But what we won't do, what the country can't afford to do, is re-fight the political battles of two years ago or go back to the way things were."

The most distressing, depressing, punch-in-the-guts news I can recall reading since 9/11. Yes, 9/11. Yes, that is the extraordinarily extent in which the news is that so very disturbing, destructive to our future, the future of America and the world. Maybe Romney will in fact win, but right now I am having a very hard time dealing with Obama's monu-Mental victory.

The Kenyan definitely has Americans by the short hairs. Elections do have consequences. I’m afraid November is going to be too late.

this....if i saw John Roberts today i would spit on him but he’s given us the ammunition to make the 2010 midterms seem like peanuts compared to what we can do this November....

We made a big mistake in thinking the SC would sort out a bad law They have given it back to the congress and the voters to sort out. This is now do or die. We need a vote soon in the House...just to find out if our current reps stand with us. We need to attempt a vote in the Senate, but most of all we need to vote in a new majority in the Senate and House and a new President. Then we need to tell them, in no uncertain terms..that they have 30 days of the new congress to terminate this law. No excuses...on the phones and emails every day..demonstrations at local offices. Heat..

The left will, probably, lose big this November, so this leftist win will, probably, be, only, temporary. Pray big, and vote big for the long-term future of U.S. conservatism!

You don’t understand how our moronic electorate works in this country. People vote for a person they perceive as one who gets things done, with this victory, Obama now has the perception as a person who gets things done, whether or not, people actually agree with it. They don’t think as deeply about things as we do here.

The bottom line is that Roberts was the last line of defense, and he blew it.

Good analysis. Roberts behavior is just a variation on the old game of the GOP fighting under Marquess of Queensberry rules while the dims brawl. He doesn't believe this is a matter for SCOTUS and therefore refused to rule it unconstitutional. But he threw us a bone with the commerce clause part of the ruling.

All the dims need to do now is get Obama reelected and they are home free. National Socialism will be our future.

I sensed this at the Post Office I was at today. One black guy was definately all pumped up about this being a historic “victory”.

Get ready for the nauseating Obamacare Victory Tour. The kenyan will never be in DC except to play golf.

Justice Roberts did a “coup de cour” today. In ruling Obamacare was a tax and not a penalty he hung it around the One’s neck like an albatross. A move worthy of Machiavelli!

“I’m afraid November is going to be too late.”

I worry it’s already too late and what happens in November may make matters worse, what with our votes being counted in Spain.

I have read that already about 50% of Obamacare has been implemented. The really egregious parts won't take effect until after the 2012 election so the People won't feel the excessive cost until he is reelected. I also fear it is too late to save this country.

This will lead to huge deficits, followed by a payroll tax that is progressive and then a VAT that ever increases. Just as in Europe where the typical payroll tax is 50% to 70%.

Take someone who makes 50,000 Euros at 50% and another person who makes 100,000 Euros at the 70% payroll tax rate, the take home for the first employee is 25,000 Euros and the guy who makes double takes home only 30,000 Euros. Think it will not happen in the US? Think govt education will become free because no one will in the first generation pay to become a doctor, lawyer, etc., and in successive generations the wealth will have been sucked from the TAXPAYERs and the State itself will need doctors and have to provide free education in order to education all sectors of the economy job seekers. This is the state of the EU. Nanny state that is just now pulling back from the End-Game of insolevent Nation-States - Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, SPAIN and if Germany is stupid to underwrite the collective failure then too the Germans as well.

And to follow up, the VAT in the EU is between 19-21% in most countries. This VAT, after the payroll tax that is 50-70% means that workers/employees who take home 25-30,000 Euros end up paying another 20% (actually 40% or more after the first cut before take home pay), and then have the privilege of paying 8 bucks a gallon for petro and double for burgers, cokes, Snickers, cars, etc....

I am just sick and tired of seeing presidents nominate justices that they thought would be conservative only to have them get on the court and turn into a liberal. Now Roberts can join the Earl Warren, John Paul Stevens and David Souter club.

And I keep thinking back to when President Reagan nominated Robert Bork. If only he had been confirmed things would be a lot different.

I don't believe Roberts was threatened or bribed, as people here have suggested. I discussed ~couple months back how it's ALWAYS, ALWAYS the conservatives that flip. Never does a Marxist flip. So, the liberals have a 5-4 SCOTUS majority, period, as Roberts can NEVER be trusted for anything EVER again (not even for the time of day).

And there is NOTHING, not even ritualistic suicide Roberts can do to unscrew the pooch on this one. Roberts (and his family and friends) needs to be treated like the grotesque walking abortion he is. Hopefully, no one is around to help him the next time he has a seizure.

I'd rather go on a cross country road trip with Jerry Sandusky than piss on Roberts if he was on fire. And you can quote me on that.

Notice how everything is always about Obama or Congress
it is never about the people or how it will affect us. This law does not affect the congress or Obama they are exempt from it. I am so pissed and I truly hope they get what they deserve the media as well as they helped in perpetuating this fraud known as Obama

It’s a popularity contest and conservatives need to remember that Obama won 53% of the vote and over 4.5 million more votes than McCain by simply promising to pull a rabbit out of a hat and give people something for nothing. This will be long multi-generational fight.

The billions government doles out to the various statist organizations mean a lot to them, but very little to the individual taxpayer and voter. The inertia is with them and against us. If the GOP sweeps in November, but cannot get the economy going its over. People want jobs and incomes.

If we get them bread they’ll attend our circus.
