Sea levels rising on US East Coast faster than anywhere else (3 times faster than global average)

The Atlantic Ocean is rising at an annual rate three times faster than the global average since 1990, according to the US Geological Survey.

Sea levels are rising much faster along the U.S. East Coast than they are around the globe, putting one of the world's most costly coasts in danger of flooding, government researchers report.

U.S. Geological Survey scientists call the 600-mile (965-kilometer) swath a "hot spot" for climbing sea levels caused by global warming. Along the region, the Atlantic Ocean is rising at an annual rate three times to four times faster than the global average since 1990, according to the study published Sunday in the journal Nature Climate Change.

It's not just a faster rate, but at a faster pace, like a car on a highway "jamming on the accelerator," said the study's lead author, Asbury Sallenger Jr., an oceanographer at the agency. He looked at sea levels starting in 1950, and noticed a change beginning in 1990.

Since then, sea levels have gone up globally about 2 inches (5 centimeters). But in Norfolk, Virginia, where officials are scrambling to fight more frequent flooding, sea level has jumped a total of 4.8 inches (12.19 centimeters), the research showed. For Philadelphia, levels went up 3.7 inches (9.4 centimeters), and in New York City, it was 2.8 inches (7.11 centimeters).

Climate change pushes up sea levels by melting ice sheets in Greenland and west Antarctica, and because warmer water expands.

Computer models long have projected higher levels along parts of the East Coast because of changes in ocean currents from global warming, but this is the first study to show that's already happened.

By 2100, scientists and computer models estimate that sea levels globally could rise as much as 3.3 feet (1.01 meters).

Maybe we have just too many buildings and people in places like New York City and the land is tipping over.(sarc.)

Sometimes I think this country would be better off if we could just saw off the Eastern Seaboard and let it float out to sea.

Funny, but the sea seems to be rising fastest where Obama is.

They are just beating the drums in order to drown out the real science. The left are masters of the big lie.

No doubt it is the worst in high minority areas.

The density of water varies with temperature and salinity. In addition, changes in atmospheric pressure and the velocity of currents can cause water to pile up. Bathymetry also plays a role.

This new news would appear to be in total disagreement with glowbull warming adherents are saying...

with zer0, we should have upon us the moment the rise of the oceans began to swell. This would lay serious scientific FACT and CREDENCE to sea levels lowering on the east coast, while they rise elsewhere in the world, parts of the world not as fortunate to live under the reign of zer0...

It is true.I am sure it is true. Since Washinton DC sucks so much in at all times it is no wonder the sea levels are too being sucked in.

Only reminds me of the story Chicken Little ......... regardless of truth or common sense there are always enough idiots around to buy up the hard hats.

Maybe we should be selling hard hats ?

Of course those variables are considered, but remember the gist of the piece;

"Climate change pushes up sea levels by melting ice sheets in Greenland and west Antarctica, and because warmer water expands."

The Al Gore zombies are trying to ratchet up the AGW rhetoric again.

Uh...I’m no big bang genius or scientist....but.....ocean levels rise at the same level EVERYWHERE, IF they rise at all. That is, of course, unless due to hurricanes or storm surges.

It’s much more likely that the east coast, or portions of it, are slowly sinking.....just as is the case along the Gulf Coast...

Gotta love how the chicken little global warming enviro wackos try to spread this BS as fact....lol. Also gotta love how they blame global warming for warmer ocean temps at the poles, when underwater volcanic activity is the cause.

Yes, the ones with the propellers.

Maybe I'm dense, but I thought water seeks its own level everywhere!

How can it rise more in one place than another?

Maybe the Eastern coast is sinking?

It's not sinking. Gilligan just moved the Professor's depth-measuring stick further out to secure a crab trap in deeper water.

Here’s something I think folks are missing.

I agree that water will find it’s own level, but here’s another aspect of this that the Gorebal Worming nuts are missing.

If water rises in one area, it must therefore sink in another.

Where is it sinking Lefties? (There isn’t more water all of a sudden)

Wow! They're right!
I live on the east coast. I just went in to "address" my terlit. I noticed the right side water level is noticeably higher than the left side.

‘Except for the impact of gravitational tide levels and winds’

I was thinking along the lines of gravitational physics. I wonder whats changed in that regard. Nothing I think...at least that ‘scientists’ have discovered. Sinking land mass or a change of gravitational physics are the only bits which could do what they’re describing. LOL, should be interesting to see what the explanation is b/c anyone w/ a functioning brain is going to want to know that.

Oh no....the intellectual gravity of the Northeastern liberal is so massive and gravitudinous, that all the water from the rest of world piles up there! No, really! Ever look at the water glasses in a room when the Messiah walks in? The water all gravitates to him.

Does this data include measurements of erosion caused by storm damage along that coast?
