DURHAM, N.H. (CBS) An anonymous donor has agreed to pay a New Hampshire towns extra security costs for President Barack Obamas visit on Monday.
Durham officials say they didnt mean to raise a ruckus, but they didnt have the money budgeted for police, fire and EMS services needed for President Obamas visit, and the Obama for America campaign said they wouldnt pay.
Some people are very positive about the position that the town has taken to date, and others have been very critical. Some have expressed it as being un-American the position we have taken, others feel it is the right thing to do, and campaigns, whoever the party, whatever the party, should pay the costs associated with the visit, said Durham Town Manager Todd Selig.
Town Council Chair Jay Gooze says a local resident has stepped up to the plate.
An anonymous donor, a Durham resident, contacted the town administrator and council chair, and offered to pay for town public safety costs up to $20,000. The donor wanted us to make public his or her sentiment that the town had done the right thing in asking the campaign to do its part, said Gooze.
Officials said the donor craves privacy, and just felt this was the right thing to do.
We are grateful for this generous offer, said Gooze.
“Liberal elites support Obama - they’ve got the money. That’s what’s happening here. Some uber rich guy is funding Obama.”
With all due respect, I think you may be wrong on this one - the donor said he wanted it to be known that the community did the right thing by asking the BHO campaign to pay this cost.
I think this donor may have been trying to make it right with the town and hopes it becomes known that the BHO campaign were pikers and tried to stiff them.
I don’t get this. According to news reports Obama is raking in millions of dollars every week at these ritzy fundraisers with celebrities. Why can’t they afford to spend $20,000?
Sorry for the double post!
In May, the Obama campaign collected $60 million.
In May, the Obama campaign spent $74 million.
Martha Stewart?
The article says the donor offered to pay the costs “up to $20,000.”
How much you wanna bet that if the town only spends $10,000, the campaign will tell then to cough up the other ten?
(If they’ll try to grab people’s wedding and birthday gifts, it would only be in character.)
Even if all the forks are sterling silver (I'd go with titanium), it still doesn't add up.
Good. That’s $20,000 that will NOT be spent on TV, Radio and Newspaper ads. Way to go Durham. Every mid-sized town/city should require the Obama Campaign to pay their fair share. After all, isn’t the Obama campaign raising a $Billion this campaign season? (/sarc.)
Yo—DURHAM, N.H., Get the cash UP FRONT!!
I’ll bet its gone down like this....
Town asks for money, campaign does not want to set precedent of paying for town visit because everyone will then ask, so says NO publically but in fact pays it on the quiet to do it, bet the mystery donor is linked to obama campaign.
No Ceaser, no! Do not go to Rome!
new way to make a campaign donation without the restrictions ?
watch for more of this...
re: forks. Obama’s security confiscated all the forks from the facility where he was meeting with a group of Latino supporters last week.
Not only that, but what happens when this person tries to deduct this contribution on his or her income taxes?
Those silly Koch Brothers and their shinanigans.
George Sorass is the donor
“re: forks. Obamas security confiscated all the forks from the facility where he was meeting with a group of Latino supporters last week.”
And knives as well.
