Answering questions from reporters today, Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi previewed her party's likely legislative response should the Supreme Court strike down ObamaCare's health coverage requirement, suggesting that Democrats will look for a functional alternative to the mandate — a way to mandate insurance coverage without running afoul of the Constitution:
You have to eat your vegetables — you have to have the mandate in order for this to work from a financial standpoint…If Americans like the idea that they and their children cannot be deprived for a lifetime of health care insurance because of a pre-existing health care condition, then that will require some other action if that is to happen. And what would that be? There could be something passed in the Congress, similar to what we had originally in the House bill, which was a surcharge on the wealthy to pay for aspects of that … States can take their own actions.

Have to confess I don't know exactly what "bat guano" is, but Pelosi really came up with a nutty statement today on another issue:
She accused the Republicans on Issa's Oversight Committee of trying to get Holder for contempt because civil libertarian Holder is the guy who is getting in the way of their schemes to suppress voter turnout!!!

She should have got that message in November 2010, so I doubt she'll ever get it. That's why she still talks about redoing Obamacare even if the SCOTUS strikes it down, which looks more and more like they're going to do. She won't have a prayer of doing anything like ObamaCare in the next Congress, if it goes the way we think it will.
You can’t be deprived of health insurance for a lifetime due to a pre-existing condition; just of coverage for that condition. And what to do about care for that uncovered condition? Pay for it yourself, get help from family, try holistic approaches, or apply to a private philanthropy. Or even (Gasp! Organ music!) become poor and get covered via Medicaid. Big deal.
