My friend Bill Otis was a Justice Department lawyer for many years. He spent a good portion of those years as a prosecutor. He also served as an attorney in the White House Counsel’s shop, so he knows all about dealing with unpleasant congressional investigations and demands for documents.
In short, Bill is extremely very well positioned to comment knowledgably on the dispute between Rep. Issa’s Committee and Eric Holder, and on the White House’s decision to assert executive privilege. Here is what Bill had to say:
Even with his fawning press, [Presdient Obama] will pay a price for this one. He knows this, meaning that the documents now to be withheld must be dynamite. They have to show either that Holder knew what was going on with Fast and Furious and approved it, or that he directly committed perjury in his Congressional testimony, or both. I just can’t see any other explanation for such a risky move.
Wasn’t the Washington Post just covering big time the 40th anniversary of Watergate? I wonder how much coverage this one will get.
UPDATE: Some have speculated that Obama’s intervention means that the president himself has something to hide.

That’s exactly what I thought when I saw he’d filed executive privilege. Imagine a single email sitting out there saying that this is a good program because it will allow exploitation of the so-called gun-show-loophole and new gun-grabbing regulations.
My guess is that there was coordination with 0bama and Hillary to orchistrate a crisis resulting with an international treaty with Mexico to ban guns in the USA.
Pretty unlikely.
But he will probably lose in November.
Then next year you can watch him every night at 8:00 on MSNBC.

They have to show either that Holder and Obama knew what was going on with Fast and Furious and approved it, or that he and that Holder directly committed perjury following Obama's explicit orders in his Congressional testimony, or both.
And I’ll bet he knew minute details, cuz he likes to be in the middle of controversial things. They are rattled and will regret what I have a hunch is a knee jerk reaction. And my mom told me to always follow my hunches.

Totally agree. The left has several brass rings to grab in this country, social medicine was one, and so is gun-grabbing. Obama wanted bold strokes.
Republicans on the committee believe Holder prepared a document for Obama describing all about F£F and that is why they are withholding the documents. Whether Obama actually saw the document is the question.
My guess is, YES, he knew all about it!
Remember, the committee already has some of the withheld documents given to them by whistleblowers. Holder and Obama don’t know what documents the committee possess.
Ya think? Since both Obama and Holder have denied all knowledge of F&F, how can Obama claim executive privilege?
What about evidence of direct contacts between WH and pre-arranged shady recipients of firearms — would that qualify as dynamite?
