My friend Bill Otis was a Justice Department lawyer for many years. He spent a good portion of those years as a prosecutor. He also served as an attorney in the White House Counsel’s shop, so he knows all about dealing with unpleasant congressional investigations and demands for documents.
In short, Bill is extremely very well positioned to comment knowledgably on the dispute between Rep. Issa’s Committee and Eric Holder, and on the White House’s decision to assert executive privilege. Here is what Bill had to say:
Even with his fawning press, [Presdient Obama] will pay a price for this one. He knows this, meaning that the documents now to be withheld must be dynamite. They have to show either that Holder knew what was going on with Fast and Furious and approved it, or that he directly committed perjury in his Congressional testimony, or both. I just can’t see any other explanation for such a risky move.
Wasn’t the Washington Post just covering big time the 40th anniversary of Watergate? I wonder how much coverage this one will get.
UPDATE: Some have speculated that Obama’s intervention means that the president himself has something to hide.

Can't be ruled out, especially with this stonewalling.
The should sue Obama in court on his authority to withhold the documents from the Congress. If he loses, he’ll have to turn over the documents by court order.
They could skip all that chest pounding by the Demon-rats.
There is another possibility. Holder has the goods on Jarrett/Axelrod/Rahm, etc....and EP is the price of the blackmail. Obama would throw Axelrod and Rahm under the bus but not Jarrett.

No matter what it was, if what happened was that bad, I don't think they'd keep the papers and anything handed over, I wouldn't trust anyway.

(John) Lott relates his interactions with Obama in his new book, co-authored with Americans for Tax Reform’s Grover Norquist, “Debacle: Obama’s War on Jobs and Growth and What We can Do Now to Regain Our Future.”
“The book relates a couple out of the dozen-and-a-half conversations that I had with him (Obama),” Lott told The Daily Caller. ”But they were all very short, cut off by Obama turning his back on me and walking away.”
“He wouldn’t shake hands. It was very clear that Obama disagreed on the gun issue and acted as if he believed that people who he disagreed with were not just wrong, but evil. Unlike other liberal academics who usually enjoyed discussing opposing ideas, Obama simply showed disdain.”
Lott and Obama were colleagues at the University of Chicago Law School in the 1990s.
