Editor's note: Peter Bergen, CNN's national security analyst, is a director at the New America Foundation and the author of the new book, "Manhunt: The Ten-Year Search for Bin Laden -- From 9/11 to Abbottabad."
(CNN) -- On Monday, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney called for the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate a series of recent leaks that critics charge are designed to bolster the national security credentials of the Obama administration.
Investigations by special prosecutors can take on a life of their own.
Recall that the investigation of the Whitewater real estate deal in Arkansas -- in which Bill and Hillary Clinton actually lost money -- morphed into the scandal of the Monica Lewinsky affair.
During the George W. Bush administration, Scooter Libby, a top aide to Vice President Dick Cheney, was convicted not of leaking the name of CIA officer Valerie Plame but of making false statements to the FBI during its investigation of the leak and also perjuring himself.

Does anyone really think anything will come from this?
For Chrissakes, they caught Sandy Berger red handed stealing national secrets and all he got was a book deal.
I think that these state-run media channels that no one watches are used for another purpose. That is to allow individuals that the regime has designated to make certain statements that can then be picked up by other news outlets with wider distribution like the times conglomerate.
I’m not holding my breath.
So some Mexicans and border agents got killed. So what?
Who are they in the grand scheme of things? We need to get the Messiah re-elected.
Now go pay your taxes - we’ll need the money for the campaign. :)

That’s so close to true, it’s scary, T.
Everybody knows that was just an honest mistake. Who among us doesn't carry classified documents in their socks?
Peter Bergen is without doubt a functional idiot who cannot envision that leaks of government ‘kill’ lists is far more substantive than, say the media-hyped outing of Valerie Plame, for instance. I’m sure Peter can remember the significance and import of such a travesty - outing a deskbound clerk in the CIA who falsely claims she was ‘under cover’......yes, Peter, you’re an effing idiot.
The left’s bench is deep with functional idiots and tools, ripe-and-ready for all ‘occasions’, and when called upon, step-up to bat.
I fully understand that. We as conservatives have to be prepared to rebuke and shun these people from all walks of life: friends, relatives, acquaintences, etc. To my mind, political persuasion is a critical guideline for hiring, purhasing or buying services or goods. Give them NOTHING and make them understand why.
I’ve been doing that for years, even with some of my more ‘moderate’ friends who’ve moved left despite my cogent arguments to keep them on-center, rather than let them slip over to the dark side.
I’ve ‘saved’ some, but lost others to the hell of liberalism since 0bummer became dictator. I’ve sadly realized that their souls were already lost, anyway, and didn’t mourn their loss for very long. I let them know in no uncertain terms *why* we no longer had a relationship. Their loss.
