New Line/Warner Bros’ Rock Of Ages (3,470 theaters) is falling to earth with a thud. Which Hollywood expected because the pic had been tracking poorly for weeks (and even went down at one point week to week). The studio felt the 1980s period piece was a hard sell to younger moviegoers. I suspect the problem was casting. Russell Brand has been repellant to moviegoers, while Tom Cruise as iconic rocker proved just too incredulous for audiences.

Admittedly, I am not a fan of Rap or the Rock of the last 20 years, but still, when I saw the previews at the theater, I laughed.
I seldom laugh at non-comedy previews.
There was no mistake or accident in that naming...it was an in tyour face insult to Christianity and, IMHO, challenge to the saving Grace and goodness of our Savior.
So, I am happy to see it flop...while much more wholesome movies do much, much better. I bet the upcoming, "Brave" will out earn Rock of Ages.
Good riddance.
He was good in “Taps”.
Robert Downey was great in tropic thunder.
The problem isn’t casting, the problem is it’s a dumb story with execution so poor the previews were painful to watch. Didn’t matter who they put in that turkey, nobody really want to watch their favorite actor say dialog so dumb it makes them retch.
And the pervert morons in Hollywood can't get a clue!
Would you believe rumor has it that they are casting the Cruiser as Jack Reacher, of the Lee Childs action novel series?

If I were creating a spoof of Tough action heroes, I can't think of a better choice.
But I don't think that they're thinking spoof.

The Broadway show is awesome. Those rarely translate to film. Tom Cruise doesn’t help either..,

Disney dropped the “of Mars” because “Mars needs Moms” tanked. One of those weird pieces of Hollywood executive logic: clearly Mars Needs Mom didn’t tank because of moms, everybody loves moms, so it must be Mars’ fault. Which then of course means taking all the Mars out of the ads, so you get a shirtless guy jumping far, and only real nerds have any interest in going to see it, and there just aren’t that many of us.
This should have been an easier, and a lot cheaper, film to make. To start with, location. When you think 1980s, who thinks of the Sunset Strip?
Music in the 1980s was totally dominated by MTV, the best new music advertisement medium every created. But MTV is owned by Viacom, and this movie was made by New Line/WB.
Major problem here. While WB music played a lot on MTV, they were just customers, not part of the scene.
And yes, the casting sucks lizard eggs.
I happened to see it last week and it sucked. There are better musicals out there.
I wanted to see it because I thought it might be good and I came away very disappointed.

Joss Wheedon is a genius in my book, but he let the CGI’s take over far to much in that comic book movie he just made.
There were some clever Wheedon moments but far too few.
Just because you can create one million comuter generated villains who all look alike doesn’t mean we have to watch our heroes kill every single one, particularly when they keep coming.
Adam Sandler made one good movie in his life and he almost ruined that one. I refer to 50 First Dates.
I will never see a movie with Adam Sandler in it nor one with that guy who played Elf.
There’s no originality left in movies or television.
Everything seems to be a remake.
How many times can you make Snow White?
And, since I refuse to watch reality shows that doesn’t leave much.
It’s idiocracy in show biz and part of the problem may be that the money guys won’t take a chance on anything original.

I saw that movie TWICE largely to see him in this role.
80s hair metal, which is what the movie is built around, came first out of the Sunset Strip. Van Halen, the Crue, Quiet Riot, Ratt, all from the Strip, then all the new acts (yes pushed by MTV) had to imitate that sound.
LOL.
