Valérie Trierweiler should 'keep to her place', says French prime minister
The Telegraph UK ^ | 6/13/2012 | Henry Samuel

France's prime minister has warned Francois Hollande's girlfriend Valérie Trierweiler to "keep to her place" after she backed his former partner's rival in parliamentary elections, causing a major political headache for the President.

Jean-Marc Ayrault became the highest ranking French Socialist to give the 47-year old First Lady a public dressing down for her online swipe at Ségolène Royal, 58, the mother of President François Hollande's four children.

It came amid reports Mr Hollande, 57, was furious at a tweet sent out by his girlfriend wishing "good luck" to Miss Royal's rival in the western La Rochelle constituency ahead of Sunday's elections. The message put her at odds with the President, who officially backs Miss Royal and has offered her a post as president of the National Assembly should she win.

Mr Ayrault told France Info radio: "(Miss Trierweiler's) role is a discreet one which is not easy to figure out. I can accept that beginnings are always a bit complicated, but everyone must keep to their place."

The prime minister also said President Hollande shared his view that "one should not mix one's public and private lives".

He reiterated that Miss Royal had both his and the president's "full support" in her election battle against Socialist dissident Olivier Falorni.

In more embarrassment for Mr Hollande, a poll released today forecast Mr Falorni – who was expelled from the Socialist Party for refusing to stand down – will trounce Miss Royal by 58 per cent to 42 per cent on Sunday. While she narrowly came top in the first round, supporters of the local ousted Right-wing UMP candidate appear to be heeding his call to vote for "anyone but Royal"

Ok why does reading this about France’s new “leaders” remind me of the TV shows Dallas and Dynasty?

Poll show Segolène Royal losing to Olivier Falorni, the renegade socialist, in a 58-42 landslide, a terrible blow to François Hollande’s quest for a large socialist majority in the Parliament. Sarko’s party, UMP has decided to vote Royal out. Smart move- first you knock out the queen.

Valérie has been put in her place by the PM, but still refuses to recant or even admit she was out of line. This is far from over as Palace gossip has now gone public.

The French are always good for their sideshows if great entertainment value.

My own opinion is that Hollande is going to be a very lonely man. The laughingstock of France, who can’t even control his own household, let alone the nation.

You’re right, some of the French papers are calling this “Dallas on the Seine” and “Dynasty à la française”

I think this revolting display of weakness and pettiness at the highest levels of power will effect Sunday’s election. Many of the people who were going to stay home will be motivated to come out and vote against the Socialist candidates, hoping to prevent these incompetents from having control of all power in France.

Truly, the tweet heard round the world

Okay, so the current first lady, actually, technically, the president’s current girlfriend, is having a peeing contest with the president’s former girlfriend and mother of his children. Said former girlfriend, incidentally, is also the first female major-party nominee for the presidency in her own right (2007, lost to Nicolas Sarkozy). This is not only awkward, but politically and personally near-incestuous.

That said, for some reason, this number for some reason seemed appropriate to the situation:

So ridiculous. These people need a few slaps and some etiquette lessons.

In addition, the writer is dishonest with his headline and with his first paragraph as the quote actually contains the phrase “everyone must keep to their place”, which has an entirely different flavor.

I know she’s a socialist, but I always felt that Ségolène Royal should have won for her name alone.

Not really guilty. She may be very attractive but it seems she has ego larger than Hollande's.

Hollande and Valerie have been together for 7 years. He was cheating on Sego and he was secretly with Valerie when Sego ran for president and lost to Sarko in 2007.

It seems pauvre François doesn’t know Valerie very well, even though his staff and PS officials have said they were afraid of something like this. They say he is furious over this.

My best guess is pauvre François will have to make a choice soon- the presidency back to normal, or his paramour. Let’s see what Sunday’s elections bring before making a formal prediction.
