There were many Indian massacres or atrocities committed in the nineteenth century that resulted in many more deaths to whites and Indians. This story tells of an incident that was particularly brutal.
May 18, 1871, the next day after General Sherman, Gen. Marcy, and their escorts passed over the road between Fort Belknap and Fort Richardson ... a wagon train, loaded with corn, and belonging to Capt. Henry Warren, ... was attacked by Chief Satanta, Satauk, (Satank), Big Tree, and perhaps other chiefs in command of about 100 (Kiowa) warriors, not a great distance from Flat Top Mountain, about half-way between Fort Richardson and Fort Belknap (west Texas), and on the identical road over which Gen. Sherman, Gen. Marcy and others passed during the preceding day.
The train, when attacked, was under the command of Nathan S. Long, wagon-master. Many warriors were armed with the most modern rifles, known at that time. The teamsters were as helpless as children, Nathan Long, John Mullins, J. S. and Samuel Elliot, B. J. Baxter, Jesse Bowman, and James Williams, were killed. Thomas Brazeale was seriously wounded, but escaped, and R. A. Day, and Charles Brady, escaped unharmed. Samuel Elliott was burned to death. The savages chained him to the wheel of a wagon so he could not move, and then built a fire around his feet.

I wonder if Capt Warren is an ancestor of Elizabeth?
The article here shows that a Harvard alumnus and her son are authentic members of the Kiowa tribe are speaking out against Elizabeth Warren for ethnic fraud by claiming that she is a Native American.

It would be ironic if Elizabeth is related to Capt. Warren of the infamous Warren Train Massacre.
Anyone one know if there is a connection?
If so, then it would mean that descendants of the Kiowa who in 1871 overwhelmed a peaceful wagon train, shot victims in the face and burned people alive are now criticizing Elizabeth Warren?

The ambush had been planned by a large band of Kiowa warriors under the leadership of Satanta, Big Tree, Satank, and Eagle Heart. Hidden in a thicket of scrub in the Salt Creek Prairie, they observed the slow approach of several wagons accompanied by 17 Buffalo soldiers of the 10th Cavalry Regiment, the black troopers. Relatively easy pickings, but no one moved.
The previous night, a shaman had prophesied that this small party would be followed by a larger one with more plunder for the taking. The braves were rewarded three hours later when 10 mule-drawn wagons filled with army corn and fodder trundled into view. The Kiowa attacked and quickly overwhelmed this convoy. Seven muleskinners were killed, while five managed to escape.
The warriors lost three of their own, but left with 41 mules heavily laden with supplies. It was well after dark before the white survivors reached the nearby Fort Richardson and told their harrowing tale to the very officer whose party had passed unharmed under the Kiowa guns, William Tecumseh Sherman.
He ordered the arrests of the Indian war chiefs, and had them sent to the fort. Satank was killed in the train as he tried to escape the column of United States soldiers. The rest were tried in the first Indian trial in history. Satanta and Big Tree were convicted of murder.

FUN FACT: Satanta was the inspiration for the character “Blue Duck” in the TV series “Lonesome Dove”.
***FUN FACT: Satanta was the inspiration for the character Blue Duck in the TV series Lonesome Dove.****
There was a Cherokee named Blue Duck who took up with Belle Starr of Oklahoma.

Belle Starr was uglier than a mud fence, it seems.
Belle Starr looks like a man to me, the outlaws that had her must have been very hard up.
Warren is her married name.
Though the history is interesting.
Rather than face life in prison, Satanta committed suicide by jumping out a window at the Walls Unit in Huntsville.
Legend says his spirit still haunts the grounds of the Walls Unit.
I know of at least one earlier trial in Minnesota: Great Sioux Uprising
There may be other early Indian trials as well.
I’m in the middle of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee which is the story of the 1860’s and on Indian Wars as told from the Indian perspective.
Reading he book shows a common thread precipitating these wars were the US Gov’t’s repeated violations of previous treaties, US Army slaughter of Indian women and children and the unscrupulous Indian agency administrators.
That's odd. Here's how she was portrayed, by Pamela Reed, in The Long Riders.
Meh. Pretty face, no chest. Starr didn’t even have the pretty face.
Samuel Elliott was burned to death. The savages chained him to the wheel of a wagon so he could not move, and then built a fire around his feet. This type of torture was portrayed in a really good movie starring James Garner and Sidney Poitier, Duel at Diablo. The victim was played by a post-Gunsmoke Dennis Weaver.
