Authorities are investigating a series of traffic collisions in the San Gabriel Valley involving U.S. Secretary of Commerce John Bryson, authorities said Saturday.
Bryson was found unconscious in his vehicle and has been hospitalized, officials said.
Bryson was driving a Lexus in the 400 block of South San Gabriel Boulevard shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, when he allegedly rear-ended a Buick as it was waiting for a train to pass, according to a statement released by the L.A. County Sheriff's Department and the San Gabriel Police Department.
After briefly stopping to talk to the three men inside the Buick, Bryson left the location in the Lexus and then struck the Buick a second time, authorities said. The men followed Bryson's car and called 911 to ask for police assistance.
Bryson continued to drive his Lexus into Rosemead, which is patrolled by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. There, he allegedly crashed into a second vehicle near the intersection of San Gabriel Boulevard and Hellman Avenue.
There authorities found him alone and unconscious behind the wheel of his car.
Bryson was treated at the scene by Los Angeles County firefighters. Authorities said drugs or alcohol do not appear to have played a role in the crash. They said Bryson was cooperative. He was cited for felony hit and run but was not booked into jail because he had been admitted to the hospital. His condition was not known.
According to his official biography, Bryson was chairman of Edison International, the parent company of Southern California Edison for 18 years until 2008.
"Throughout a distinguished career in which he's led nonprofits, government agencies and large companies, he's been a fierce proponent of alternative energy," President Obama said in announcing Bryson's nomination last year.

He just wants to be like his hero, Teddy Kennedy.
Oops....they made sure to say he was found alone.....something fishy here.
He knows too much.

Well, for his sake, from a legal standpoint, that’s good news. But, possibly not good news from a medical standpoint. Must be something like a mini-stroke or something.
Was he the only one in the vehicle?
or hypnosis
At least it wasn't Bill Bryson--he needs to be safe and sound to keep writing books.
He would have done no damage to either car if he drove a Smart Car. In fact, he would not have been able to drive away after the first hit.
or hypnosis
If he had a Volt he would have been found, passed out, in his own driveway!
Sorry, no supporter of this guy, but it sounds like he is diabetic to me. All the actions are not inconsistent with a low blood sugar incident. The hospital would test that immediately, and if his numbers were extremely low it would answer all the drug and alcohol questions immediately.
I cared for a father who did similar things when his blood sugar dropped. In fact it caused him to come live with us, so we could keep tabs on him.
The above CBS news story shows a ‘digital recreation’ of the accident, apparently he struck the back of the first car, pulled out and around, then back again into the right lane, clipping the front of the other car with his car’s rear. Finally, he struck the back of another car and fell unconscious.
If he's diabetic, probably too much insulin and not enough food.
Just started seeing banners saying ‘US Commerce Secretary suffered seizure during California hit and run’ And now we see the cover story starting out. Such a discovery, being found unconscious, etc, results in only an overnight hospitalization?
I hope the five in those two cars have found some pretty damn good lawyers, or they’re not going to see a penny to repair the damages.
No doubt an administration approved GREEN ELECTRIC Lexus not yet available to the average peon.
no controlling legal authority.
Your point about a seizure is well taken. For once, I’m going to defend an Obamunist. The late Lee Atwater, the late Robert Novak, and he late Teddy Kennedy all first learned that they had glioblastlma, a nearly 100% fatal brain cancer, when they had seizures. There’s no indication Bryson is a chronic traffic offender of any sort. The same was true of Bob Novak when he suffered seizure and struck a pedestrian in DC. Right now Bryson at least deserves the benefit of the doubt and may soon need our prayers.
Yep. If he was drunk, or drugged, or acting irresponsibly in some way..... throw the book at him.
But if the problems were sudden onset and health related ... as much as I'd like to, he can't be faulted for that.
I *did* think that a previous poster was prescient when they said he might "suddenly" discover that he's diabetic. This guy is a Dem, so we'll never know for sure what happened.
According to law enforcement on Fox News this morning not all of the test have come back yet!
