After Walker victory, Indiana governor suggests public unions should go

On the heels of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's history-making recall victory, the governor of nearby Indiana with his own record of curtailing union benefits suggested public-sector unions are past their prime and should be abolished.

"I think, really, government works better without them," Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels told "Fox News Sunday," when asked whether public-worker unions should even exist.

Daniels had cracked down on collective bargaining for state workers as soon as he took office in 2005, six years before Walker and his GOP allies in the state legislature started down the same path -- triggering a backlash that forced him to stand for election this past Tuesday. Walker made history as the first governor to survive the recall test, beating Democrat Tom Barrett.

“Less talk... JUST DO IT !”

No politician can “do it” without sufficient power. That power comes from the people. The Tea Party showed the way in 2010. If there is a groundswell of public opinion in favour of — whatever —, then the politicians will become motivated and empowered to do that.

Consider a counter-example. Obama and Obamacare. Obama spent a lot of political capital ramming Obamacare through. Now, it seems that about 2/3 of the people don’t support Obamacare, and it might be quashed by the SCOTUS.

If any governor were to eliminate public-sector unions, without broad public support; they (the unions) would just rise again like zombies.

States do recalls but the process isn't as popular as the proponents originally thought.

The reason usually given for a recall is so a corrupt politician can be quickly removed. Since those days the federal government has actually removed many more top level politicians for crime than all the states with recall have removed.

I think it used to be the case that the federales didn't have an anti-corruption law to use ~ which they do now.

I find recall to be rather contrary to the American process.

The Libs constitution is in Pelosi’s terrarium. It’s kept alive with an endless supply of Unicorn manure and rainbow sunshine.

Be well and have a joy joy day.

Agreed! No public servants should be unionized, especially when they have the power to strike!

When the enforcers are able to enforce their own political will.

Cop Union Boss Boasts of Beating Lawmakers With Flashlights: If Soldiers Don’t Have Unions, Why Do Police and Teachers?

"We intend to walk into Lansing after the summer break and ask the Republicans who have been so eagerly screwing us, 'who's next?' If we cannot earn their respect we will do what we have always done; hit it with a flashlight until we gain compliance."

Now imagine a system with union cops on the street, union judges in the courts, and union guards in the prisons. That's a very dangerous self sustaining system. Jenny Granholm brought it home for me when she started importing inmates from other states for no other reason than to keep union guards on the job.

Well. THEY are probably constitutional, but their so-called "contracts" are obviously not.

Glad you brought up the Lansing thing. The ‘flashlight’ comment by that union thug is interesting. http://www.myfoxphoenix.com/story/18663819/flashlight-found-in-car ~ Some one has begun making up FLASHLIGHT BOMBS and leaving them around Phoenix.

Government Employees are the largest Lobbyist Group in the USA.

We need to curtail Government Employee power and influence by removing Unions from government.

Right now most of our elected legislators and executives are scared to death of the Government Employee Lobby.

And that’s the primary reason I oppose term limits. A bunch of noob legislators are no match for entrenched government employee union bosses. The bigger the government, the more bureaucrats, the stronger the unions, the more powerful they become. Without a serious reduction in the size of government...and complete elimination of government unions, there should be no discussion of term limits.

We've only had to endure public-sector employee unions since the late 1950's. In the grand scheme of things, that is just a gnat's breath.

There is no reason why any government employee should be in a union.

You don't think there's broad public support? Scott walker's convincing victory, plus landslide victories for reform in San Jose and San Diego say otherwise.
