HAILEY, Idaho -- E-mails from a US soldier, sent before he was captured by the Taliban in 2009, suggest he was disillusioned with the military and considering deserting.
Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, 26, told his parents in e-mails obtained by Rolling Stone magazine that he was disgusted with the US Army and ashamed to be American.
In one, which was not verified, he wrote, "I am sorry for everything here. These people need help, yet what they get is the most conceited country in the world telling them that they are nothing and that they are stupid, that they have no idea how to live... I have seen their ideas and I am ashamed to even be American."
Bergdahl, then a private first class, went missing on June 30, 2009, sparking a manhunt that saw other military missions canceled or diverted.
According to the magazine, his e-mails to his family back home in Idaho began to take on a more somber tone when one of his close friends was killed in Afghanistan.
Initially military officials thought he was captured by the Taliban after walking away from his outpost near the Pakistani border....

The problem for America is that this is a hotly contested title.
The French spring to mind.
By walking away he did desert.
The military will not forget him and will continue to look for him.
My problem is some may get hurt or killed in the search that was caused by his actions.
The second is that he will be treated as a “HERO” when he gets back and movie deals will be beating down his door.
A bigger reward than those who did their jobs to the end.
Someone shoulda told this poor kid that there are consequences for thinking like a mush-headed campus utopian in the real world.
PFC Robert Garwood redux?
I wonder what the court marshall for him being a traitor will be like?
Uhhhh... that would be "court martial".
All who are ashamed of this guy being an American... say “AYE”!
maybe the story isn’t true
No Court Marshall for him - it would be bad press for the DoD.
He’ll get to pin on SGT, maybe SSG if they keep him much longer, the POW Medal, maybe a Bronze Star and then shuffle him out the door with 100% VA benefits.
Then the Rock Star tour with all the MSM talking heads - followed by the book and movie deals.
What was he thinking when he enlisted?
When as a soldier, he cashes his checks, enjoyes his benefits and anticipates additional and very generous benefits available to former military personnel..I wonder if he feels the same way!?
If true, Sergeant, ....keep walking.
Only one problem with that theory, a "D" is in the White House. If it were still Bush, I would agree.
I mean, c'mon, it's not like a secret society that only a select few know what they do. "oh!, I didn't know that guns and imposing our will on others would be involved".
I liken it to the lefty numb-nvts I see in the corporate world that bash big business, the evils of corporations and the American capitalistic way while they make a healthy salary working for a globe spanning American corporation.
I put little credence in what one allegedly says or writes while being held prisoner by a bunch of barbarians. Let’s learn all the facts before passing judgment.
Agree, but he supposedly wrote these before he walked away.
My post mentioned nothing about what he’s done since he was picked up.
He was not left behind and captured in a firefight.
He walked away from his FOB and was picked up.
I’m sure right now he would rather be eating cheeseburgers and fries with his homeboys but his situation was caused by his actions.
As to what he’s been doing in the past three years - there are some propaganda clips of him helping the TB with some explosive training. For that he should not be charged with - as you noted. He also did escape for a few days but was recaptured.
Currently, I don't understand our mission in Iraq and Afghanistan . We would be safer in this country if we didn't import Muslims or other people that hate this country and quit trying to nation build other countries with borrowed money.
