The Department of Justice told Republican House leadership in a Tuesday letter that it hopes to reach an agreement with congressional overseers on how much information about Operation Fast and Furious it is required to hand over.
Congressional Republicans have threatened to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for not fully complying with a 22-part subpoena served last October.
The letter comes amid reports that House oversight committee chairman Rep. Darrell Issa has obtained evidence proving that senior Justice Department officials approved Operation Fast and Furious gunwalking tactics.
The Justice Department letter was in response to a request Speaker of the House John Boehner, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy and Issa sent in mid-May.
Following the receipt of your letter, the department has had a number of constructive conversations with staff aimed at satisfying the legitimate goals of congressional oversight while, at the same time, ensuring the integrity and independence of the departments law enforcement efforts, Deputy Attorney General James Cole wrote to those congressional leaders on Tuesday afternoon.
Holder and the DOJ, he added, think the GOP leaderships May 18 letter was a helpful step toward reaching a resolution of the issues in dispute.

What’s the big deal? We can sweep two murdered Federal agents and hundreds of murdered Mexican citizens under the rug can’t we? In the name of electoral smoothness. So what if it was a plot to undermine the 2nd Amendment?
All well and good; I hope you have contacted your Congressman to help stiffen his/her spine.
The DOJ and Holder are bullying ATF agents who had the courage to come forward and tell the truth. We need to stand up to the bullies... period.
I used to think that as well.
Until watching the last two weeks' activity surrounding the Wisconsin elections.
One lesson from The 0's moves (or total lack thereof) that I'm sure haven't been lost on Holder or anybody else in this administration:
If you've been pushing the agenda as hard as you can, breaking or ignoring laws as casually as stepping on bugs, suddenly you wind up looking at some penalties and you expect support that may cause The 0 even the mildest discomfort...
...that pompous SOB won't remember your name if you become too big a liability.
He might not even consider you worth a Tweet, so you already know what the chances are for a Pardon.
You'll just go under the same bus as everybody else before you.
JMHO, you understand. Still, it's going to get real interesting watching the rats bailing out of the rowboat the next couple of months.
Holder and/or the acolytes in JD could just be the first wave.
“Resist We MUCH!”
That is very simple..... all that you have or you will be held in contempt. No more stalling no more BS games put up and obey the law or we will impeach you.
