LOS ANGELES (AP) Richard Dawson, the wisecracking British entertainer who was among the schemers in the 1960s TV comedy "Hogan's Heroes" and a decade later began kissing thousands of female contestants as host of the game show "Family Feud" has died. He was 79.
Dawson, also known to TV fans as the Cockney prisoner-of-war Cpl. Peter Newkirk on "Hogan's Heroes," died Saturday night from complications related to esophageal cancer at Ronald Reagan Memorial Hospital, his son Gary said.

One of my all time favorites. RIP.
He was great in Hogan’s Heroes. Cool dude.
“Who loves you, and who do you LOVE!”
One episode Newkirk was pulling a stint in the Stalag 13 “cooler” for some infraction. Of course the “Heroes” had a tunnel to the cell where Newkirk was being held.
LeBeau was bringing Newkirk his dinner (instead of the bread and water ration provided by the Germans) on a serving tray.
Newkirk took a look at what was on the tray and said:
“Say Lebeau (sic), do you think you could a bit easier on all the bernaise sauce?”
He’s joined Hogan, Kinch, and Carter in the big stalag in the sky. We only have LeBeau left now...
If that's true and assuming Dawson had no reason to think that Carpenter was a psychopath then he can't be held responsible. But if Dawson's anything like me he still would have felt really bad.
Don’t forget Schultz, Klink and Burkhalter — they’re all gone too. But you’re right about LeBeau — you can still find him on http://www.robertclary.com. RIP Newkirk and thanks for the laughs.
Loved him on Match Game. RIP Mr. Dawson.
For me as a little girl, he was the cute one on Hogan’s Heroes. RIP.
He was a talented, funny man.
RIP, Richard.
Hogan’s Heroes
I agree. He was one hard-working guy until he retired, always with multiple projects going on and rarely taking a break. I loved the way he hosted Family Feud. He had a gracious and folksy manner - like the Johnny Carson of game show hosting. I remember when he became a US citizen and talked about it on the show with such happiness.
RIP, Richard Dawson.
The story is that Dawson intoduced Crane to Carpenter, who had the primitive video recording equipment that both guys used to record their sexual activity with numerous women.
Its a sick story with a sad ending for Bob Crane.
Dawson did well for himself in the game show field after the Hogans Heroes series.
All the Match Game regulars are together again.
Perfect villain in The Running Man.
I can expect a phone call from a friend soon. We were talking about “Hogan’s” on Wednesday of this week, and we both thought the same....he was gone years ago
RIP Mr.Dawson
Robert Clary, who played “The little cockroach”, LeBeau....who was the only cast member to survive being in a real Nazi Concentration Camp....most of the rest of the cast were Jews who had left Germany before the war.
