Reality TV shows are making increasing numbers of people convinced that they're the stars of their own, unwanted television programs.
Psychiatrists are treating more people for so-called 'Truman Show' delusions -- named after the 1998 movie starring Jim Carrey as a man who spends his entire life unwittingly at the center of a fictional world that's being broadcast to millions of homes.
The startling cases often afflict successful people who develop paranoid fantasies that they're being filmed at all times and that the world that's in front of them isn't real.
Their friends and loves ones are actors. The news they see on TV is made up to control the way they think. The things that happen to them are merely events staged for the amusement of others.
The result can turn disturbing and even violent.
In 2009, Anthony Waterlow killed his father and his sister in Australia because he believed they were broadcasting his life to the world as part of a game show to either murder him or convince him to kill himself.

Insanity is just about love.
Paranoia: the belief that somebody cares.
“What is wrong with you?”
“Why, what....?”
“Well, first off, you’re reading from note cards...”
My life is just one big Truman Show and I have noone to trust except my friends deep inside the earth.
I’m pretty sure that the rest of you are here merely to provide entertainment for me.
Just because you’re paranoid, that doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you.
Seems to be the real thing coming out of DC these days.
He knows when you are sleeping. He knows when you’re awake.
Years ago, the janitor at the place I worked for a summer at least told the story that he was being followed around by cameras and filmed. I suppose it was his way of being important. I like my privacy; couldn’t do the “reality” thing - nor would anybody be interested.
The treatment is obvious. If a man believes he’s really a woman, liberals think they should use my tax dollars for surgery to alter reality so it matches his delusions. Similarly, if a man believes he’s the star of a reality show, shouldn’t my tax dollars be used to film his TV show weekly in accordance with the PC treatment for delusions?
Watching Jim Carrey is likely to make anyone go crazy. Damn, that guy is obnoxious.
I saw I guy replacing a camera in the ceiling at work, and they’ve added dozens of cameras (I counted them one day) to both the stations where I get on and get off the train.
Of course, it’s nothing as benign as a TV show that the government’s up to.
Yep, talk about wasted talent. I’ve saw an independent movie where he played it straight in a dramatic role and he was really good. Too bad most of his movies are downright infantile or unwatchable for some other reason. I saw one of the Ace Ventura movies while drunk in college. My friends and I still walked out of it. It was so bad you couldn’t even make fun of it while drunk.
‘Increase the wind.’
—The Truman Show
Never watched anything with him long enough to see any talent, wasted or not... But then again, I read some time ago that he’s one of Hollywood’s top earners. If true, he must be doing something right.
Like Old Hickory, TH Benton killed his man in a duel. So did Colonel Burr, James Barron and William Crawford. John Randolph, however, would not agree to an “interview” with Gen. Wilkinson at Bladensburg as he was not a “gentleman” and thus was only worthy of a good horse whipping. Unfortunately, the besotted Randolph was too drunk to administer it.
Yep, a reality show of my life would be the most boring thing ever, which is fine by me.
The guy (the janitor) I was talking about lived in that fantasy 48 years ago! That was long before the current deluge of “reality” shows; heck, it was almost before cameras were even invented.
Those Kardashian women must surely love being “on” all the time. I like being able to be comfortable and not having to be made up all the time. Being incognito is the way to go!
