Washington (CNN) - The race for the White House remains very close, according to a new national poll, partly because neither President Barack Obama nor Republican challenger Mitt Romney have a clear advantage on issue number one - the economy.
A CNN/ORC International survey released Friday also indicates that Obama supporters are more energized right now than those backing Romney.
According to the poll, 49% of registered voters say that if the November election were held today, they would vote for Obama, while 46% say they would cast a ballot for Romney, the unofficial GOP presidential nominee. The president's three point margin is within the survey's sampling error. Obama had a nine point advantage in CNN's last national poll, which was conducted in early April.
The president's approval rating continues to hover around the 50% mark. Fifty-two percent give Obama thumbs up on the job he's doing in the White House, with 47% saying they disapprove of how he's handling his duties.
The survey also indicates Americans are divided in the battle for Congress, with 48% saying they would back the Democratic candidate in their congressional district and 45% saying they would support the GOP candidate.

There it is:
Independent voters are breaking 5-4 against obama in this poll and they still claim he’s got 49-46 overall. That’s BS on it’s face.
You can’t lose the independent (swing) vote by 20% and make it up. They represent 40% of the overall voters in America. So they 20% is equivalent to about 8% of the overall vote. So tell me how are you down 8% in the overall vote, and registered R and D are about even yet you somehow are up 3% in the overall poll?
Simple the poll is CRAP.
Swing voters will be breaking 5-3 to 2-1 against Obama election night, he doesn’t have a prayer to win. He’s got an absolute peak at 42-43% and the way he’s campaigning so far I’d say he’ll bs lucky to get 40%
“Screw Zero and screw Willard.”
The Obama campaign thanks you.
It takes time!
Obama is not an option!
4 more years of that a$$ hat will destroy US!
I do not like Romney BUT! I will vote for him because I will live another day to fight!!
Who thought a year ago when Conservatives were saying “ANYBODY BUT oBAMA” we would actually get the anybody? It’s time to “swallow the bitter pill”, “eat crow”, “gangrene has set in, time to cut off the foot”. I do not believe voting third party or not voting will result in obama being removed from office. I also believe that electing Romney will not begin to solve our problems but at least we will be able to look forward to elections in 2014 and 2016. If obama is re-elected I believe any future elections will be a complete sham. A bumper sticker that read “VOTE for the RINO, IT’S IMPORTANT” would be in order but may dampen enthusiasm for those that have it.
There, that does it Romney now has my official endorsement, my promise to vote for the Republican nominee will be honored, I’m also going to send a small check to the NRC, probably with a note attached, and a small check to the Romney campaign, with a small check attached, and a check to Newt to help pay off his obligations and a note attached thanking him for what he has done for Conservatives, Republicans and the Nation and for stepping forward again in these troubled times and pointing us to the right path even though we chose to turn left.
Obama supporters are more energized, but apparently not energized enough to get off their lazy asses and get jobs.
Registered voters include dead people who all vote Democrap.
Can’t argue with that. Those who claim BO & MR {notable initials
both} are two sides of the same coin need to ponder the pros-
pect of a couple of Supreme Court holes which will occur during
the next four years. Romney has the potential to stumble onto
some acceptable candidates. No such luck with Obama.

does any other poll show Obama above 50% approval? So 800 out of some 1000+ are registered... who were these other 200...? undocumented? the dead? homeless? inmates?
You are soooo right!!!!
The commies are not energized.
They just aren't.
If the commies were energized I would see it.
I don't see it.
I am not thrilled that Romney is the GOP nominee.
Voting against Obama will be the most joyous and exciting vote I have ever cast.
Time to stop posting worthless nonsense and get down to business.
That's not gonna happen and you know it.
It is long past time for this tantrum of yours to end.
If the Free Republic He-Man Mitt Haters Club had a children's auxiliary, this post would be worthy of it.
If you have to be worthless, please try to be crazy worthless instead of boring worthless.
There it is! There's that He-Man Mitt Haters stuff!
BSMH! (Big Swinging' Mitt Hater!)
What a load!
Romney just swept TX and he's going to sweep CA and NJ and several other states on Tuesday.
This thing is over. It is time for your sobbing to end as well.
Thank you
LOL, I wonder just how many Dems they had to over sample to get a positive result for Obama. There is no way that Romney can hold a 12% advantage with independent voters and be losing.
Where is your sarc tag or at the very least a barf tag.
