One of DC Comics oldest heroes is super-coming out.
The original Green Lantern - a DC Comics' mainstay for the past 70 years - will be revealed to be a gay man in next week's issue of "Earth 2."
Alan Scott - formerly a married father of two who first appeared in 1940 - tips readers off to his sexuality early on in the comic when he gives his boyfriend a welcome home kiss.
"He's very much the character he was. He's still the pinnacle of bravery and idealism. He's also gay," "Earth 2" writer James Robinson told The Post.
The Emerald Guardian's sexuality was rebooted along with the rest of his fictional universe as part of DC's "New 52" initiative aimed at rejuvenating their characters.
Robinson said he decided to make the change because making the character young again meant erasing Scott's gay superhero son out of existence.
"The only downside of his being young was we lose his son, Obsidian, who's gay. So I thought, 'Why not make Alan Scott gay?'" Robinson recalled. "That was the seed that started it."
He ran his idea by the bosses at DC, "who signed off on it without hesitation."

If I remember my comic book history correctly, DC comic first comic magazine was titled Action Comics. And that was where Superman originated.
Not quite. The DC stands for "Detective Comics", which had been around for several years before Action Comics. (Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27, a year after Action #1. The company had earlier been named National Periodicals.
"More Fun" comics predates both, and I believe that "More Fun" was renamed "Adventure Comics" early on. "Adventure Comics" was discontinued only a few years ago. It had a rotisserie of characters that did not quite warrant their own title at the time, including Superboy and Supergirl.

Anyone who allows this comic book in their home is guilty of child abuse.

Thank you for the info. Did Superman appear in Action Comics or a newspaper comic strip first?
BTW, I’m still mourning my loss of the first 100 issues of Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos back in the 70’s when I discovered upon returning from Germany, that mice had gotten into them during my overseas tour.

"...earlier this year and impending same-sex nuptials in a Marvel X-Men comic have recieved a small amount of backlash from angry parents, Robinson said he's not worried about that because "that kind of negativity is stupid and outmoded." Couple of thoughts here. First, this is a marketing gimmick and after all the "we're going to have a big announcement, a major character is gay!", having it turn out to be golden age Green Lantern is a major cop out. Might as well make it Red Tornado. After the fanfare, nobody will notice since he's a B-list character.
Second, such an arrogant creator. He's not worried about the customer reaction because anyone who doesn't like his stuff is stupid? I hope this twerp gets a lesson on why making customers unhappy matters. When he's living in a cardboard box and trying to sell his sketches of "gay spiderman" and "gay flash" at the bus depot, maybe he'll get the point.

Second, such an arrogant creator. Some people in the comics industry have enormous egos...interesting considering that 99.999999% of the American population doesn't even read comics...many of those don't even know that they are still published.
Notice how NONE of these huge box office blockbusters (Avengers, Dark Knight) don't feature 'in your face' sodomite characters? Gee...I wonder why?

No. The comic book was a hit first. It is true that the earliest comic books were simply reprints of newspaper strips, with More Fun Comics being the first with "All New" material. That is part of the reason they are called "comic" books, even though superheroes and later lurid horror and scifi would dominate, not the humor characters (Archie, Dennis the Menace, Richie Rich, Little Lulu) that have had a role, but never a dominant one. Sorry about the loss of your Sgt. Fury's. I lost some 1940s vintage Whiz Comics in a botched move.

For anyone interested in old comics, this site has a ton of old largely "off brand" golden age comics (1930s through 1950s) online. I say "off brand" because it's all public domain stuff so no Superman or anything like that but it does have a bunch of old Shazam / Marvel family stuff there and plenty of action/war/humor comics from back in the day.

It makes no sense to me either. Are DC Comic folks are under the impression there aren't enough people in the publishing industry laid off yet?
If they want 'gay' why don't they start a gay comic and leave the 70 year old Green Lantern alone? Guess we both know the answer to that one.

well it is inevitable that this evil will self extinct. No future, no children, no society. just death of evil.

I think Guy Gardner is portrayed as a jerk because he’s portrayed as a conservative and they want to use him to beat up conservatives once again.

None of their comics will enter my house again.
