Poles Demand Obama Apology For "Polish Death Camps" Comment

The president referred to “Polish death camps” while awarding a posthumous Medal of Freedom to Polish professor Jan Karski, a hero of the anti-Nazi resistance. Poles believe they're blamed unfairly for the Nazi Holocaust, and the Foreign Minister led the outrage in a late night tweet.

The remark, which barely drew notice in America, is all over the Polish news today. On the country's largest television station:

Heh, my first thought was "what if George W. Bush, or Sarah Palin had said this"? The MSM would have been all over them like white on rice, and we'd be hearing about it for weeks.

My first thought as well. I can't even wrap my head around how the corrupt MSM would have developed this into an international incident. Wall-to-wall coverage analysing the impact, the meaning, the damage, historical footage of WWII, and of course, with the unceasing guffawing.

Polish-Americans are mostly descendants of people who immigrated before the 1921 quota law was adopted. FDR at Yalta was trying to get better borders for Poland and a promise of free elections from Stalin because he was worried about the Polish vote in the next US election (of course he failed on both counts--Stalin wouldn't budge on the border, and did not keep his promise about free elections).

So Polish-Americans don't have personal experience of Communism--but I assume a lot of them were in touch with relatives in the old country and therefore were very anti-Communist. Of course from Truman to LBJ the Democrats at least pretended to be anti-Communist.

Possibly the Polish-Americans’ ancestors were speaking regional dialects that differed from the standard language. When Jimmy Carter visited Poland, he had a translator whose Polish was not the standard language, which resulted in some embarrassing mistranslations (Jimmy had “abandoned” America and “lusted” after the Polish people).

In (very partial) defense of Dear Leader, most or all of the camps were indeed geographically in Poland. Thus “Polish death camps” in a geographical sense.

would mean that Poland as a country instituted them.
