Erik Erickson, editor-in-chief of RedState.com and a CNN political contributor, reports that he is the latest conservative to be "SWAT"ed.
Local police received a call from an individual claiming to be Erickson, stating that an accidental shooting had occurred at his home. Says Erickson, "Tonight, my family was sitting around the kitchen table eating dinner when sheriffs deputies pulled up in the driveway."

Our house was raided by mistake by the King County SWAT Team. Fortunately, I was not home since they were looking for a man. They pointed loaded guns at my wife and our dogs. No one was hurt, but my wife was pretty shaken up and they made a mess out of the house. I never could get a straight answer out of them as to what had really happened.

CLID can be spoofed.
In these swatting attacks the phone number is spoofed to look like the other person’s number.
As I understand it, calls made to 911 will not have the phone number blocked even if the phone number is set up for blocking. I live in California, and when the 911 caller ID system was activated, we were advised that calls to 911 will always show the phone number as well as the home address attached to that phone number.
Maybe someone doing this has a “throw-away” cell phone. Just the same, the phone number should show on the 911 screen but I presume that no address would show. So, in cases where the 911 operator has to ask for the address, the operator should be suspicious, especially if the caller is reporting a shooting. In other words, the responding police should be operating under the suspicion that the call may be bogus.
I am so sorry that happened to your wife.
But I don’t consider the raid a “mistake”.
A “mistake” is bumping a glass of tea off the counter with your elbow.
Forcing yourself into someone’s house is not a “mistake” but an act of willful intent.
The purpose of such raids is to condition honest, law-abiding citizens into a state of fear.
If they really wanted to catch the man they were looking for, they would do honest police work and not kick down doors for the thrill of it.
Must be a coincidence that the people getting swatted were bloggers who wrote about Kimberlin.
How does that happen? If someone can forge a SIM card they can do a lot of damage.
I don’t think a call block will work when dialing into 911.
They may jolly well know where you are from the time of picking up the phone, but they ask for all this other stuff so you don’t expect too much from them (OK, I’m being sardonic).
I’m not sure this would do much to stop Swatting, however. Those pranksters seem to contrive to fabricate reports of situations that nobody would ignore (hey, I’ve got the neighbor in my rifle sights and I’m about to shoot, stuff like that).
Another point of vulnerability is the network interface. For a land line that’s often on the side of the house, if it’s a private house. Plain Old Telephone Service lines are never encrypted, and a hollow star driver bit that can be had at any major hardware store will open the security door even if the owner padlocked it. The prankster does not even need to get up on a pole, and wires could be run invisibly across the lawn if the prankster wants to make the call after safely off the property.
They also seem to count on most people not suing because it’s such a hassle to sue. If the “visit” was on account of some known or now caught criminal, one would want to try to include that person in the suit too.
Caller ID can be spoofed and there are throwaway prepaid cell phones.
I’d venture to say that in the lefty’s mind, the Conservative would notice an “intruder” and protect himself which would certainly result in return fire. With any luck, you’d have a dead Conservative and a dead Law Enforcment officer as well.
They’ll continue til someone phones in something similar of a liberal, and that liberal ends up arrested for having drugs in his possession.
They’re lucky Klinton isn’t in office or their house would’ve been filled with flammable CS gas, shot up with incendiary rounds, and the house would’ve went up like a Roman candle with them still inside. I’m sure Zero will pick up this tactic if he (God forbid) gets a second term.
However, there is a separate system called Automatic Number Identification, which as ClayinVA mentioned, is the billing system used by phone companies to bill users for toll-free calls and the like. Any toll-free operator has access to the ANI data as they are paying for the call, which is why you can't *67 (CID Block) a call to an 800 number. I would say with almost certainty that E911 has this data also, as well as geolocation data from any cell phone within 300 meters when calling 911 (Source).
How were they able to spoof the 911 operator?
I doubt they did technologically. More likely, it was a prepaid/untraceable phone and they verbally gave 911 the (wrong) coordinates of the “incident.”
This might be the closest Erik will come to combat. Yet another ‘patriot’ too good to serve in uniform.
