ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The Pakistani doctor who helped the CIA find Osama bin Laden faced accusations of corruption and other wrongdoing long before he was captured by Pakistani intelligence agents and then jailed for 33 years for treason.
In interviews over the weekend, several current and former Pakistani officials described the doctor, Shakil Afridi, as a hard-drinking womanizer who had faced accusations of sexual assault, harassment and stealing. They said his main obsession was making easy money.
According to a 2002 Pakistan health department document seen by Reuters, Afridi was deemed to be corrupt and unreliable and unfit for government service.
U.S. officials have hailed Afridi, aged in his 40s, as a hero for helping pinpoint bin Laden's location in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad where the al Qaeda leader was killed in May last year in a raid by U.S. Navy SEALs.

Just the way it is over there but we seem to not want to admit it. They continue to live in the past.
“Pakistan doctor in bin Laden case called corrupt, womanizer”
Such a Democrat in America would be called “Presidential”.

Just wow...
The very concept that someone could be deemed to be too corrupt and unreliable a person to serve in the government of Pakistan boggles the mind.
Rather, aren't corruption and unreliability the main qualifications for a position in the Pakistani government?
The reporter must have gotten something lost in the translation.
I was under the impression that Muslim men, in general, were womanizers.
Just another case where the US Gov’t used and endangered a foreign citizen for our political gain - then not only left him to fend for himself; but we also exposed him in the press before we abandoned him.
Then, we wonder why we have difficulty getting the support from other Afghani, Iraqi and Pakistani citizens in trying to track down the terrorists. They know we will get what we want from them, and abandon them, and their families to torture or death, too.
Sounds like MSM is beginning to create cover incase the Administration does not get him released.
And Reuters believes Pakistani gov't officials because they never lie. For example, the Pakistani gov't always acknowledged that Bin Laden was living in Pakistan right next to Pakistan's version of West Point.
It sure does
A lesson Pakistan learned from “Sau-al Ali-insky”, personalize, freeze and demonize.
True. Cases like this will stop many possible informants from helping the U.S.
This sounds like a news plant by the Obama Administration. This guy needs to get out of prison, regardless of his past.
Muslim “womanizer”, someone who’d dare speak to some woman who isn’t one of his four wives.
He was “unfit for government service” because he was the sort of Pakistani who’d deliver a man like Osama Bin Laden to the American government.
“Don’t blame ALL muslims for 9-11” yet we are supposed to ignore the Pakistani government calling him a traitor over this action.
Their allegiance is to the death cult that seeks to dominate the world.
Quite the opposite.
Maybe he used to hang out with Charlie Wilson.
Or Bill Clintoon.
How many years does it take to become a doctor in pock-ee-tawn?
Pock-ee-stawn? Why doesn’t the punk poser say Pres-ee-dawnt?
