The USS Illinois, the first Navy submarine to be staffed by an all-female crew, received the support of the White House on Memorial Day.
On Monday, First Lady Michelle Obama officially sponsored the Virginia-class submarine, which will be one of the newest nuclear-powered boats scheduled to enter the fleet by 2015, according to a White House statement.

Help out an ex-grunt here.
What is a “TDU weight” and why are so many laying around unused on subs available for mirth and practical jokes?
I suppose the next sub will have an all gay crew. /s
And the reason for this is........????
TDU = Trash Disposal Unit
It’s how the ship’s garbage is disposed of at sea...they compact trash into perforated steal canisters, and then insert steel weights in the canisters to make sure they sink when dropped out through the bottom of the boat.
1001 uses for TDU weights....
You beat me to it...I’m retired Air Force, but no one rises to a command billet without years of preparation and training. I’ll defer to my Navy brothers, but is there any female submariner with the requisite experience to skipper a boat, serve as chief of the boat, or even a department head?
I realize women in the submarine community will gain more rank or experience by the time the Illinois gets underway, but how much experience will she have compared to her male counterpart, who is a Commander, with at least 14-15 years of experience by the time he becomes skipper of an attack boat? And, how much experience will that first female chief of the boat have in comparison to a male senior chief or master chief?
In Air Force terms, it sounds like the equivalent of promoting a flight commander to squadron commander.
I have no problem with an all-female crew on the Illinois, provided they have the same level of experience as the “mixed” crews on other boats.
Then there will be a black crew, a redneck crew, a 1% crew, an asian and a hispanic crew. Isn’t multiculturalism grand?
They’ll divide the Hispanic crews into White Hispanic and Black Hispanic crews!
Uhmmm...they ain't men!
Next question.
Take your time. I'll be here all night.
This came straight from the mouth of my mother, the wife of a 20 year retired military officer. I told her about this story earlier today and her response was,’Good lord, they may as well paint the sub white and dangle a long cord from the tail..make it look like a giant tampon.’ My mother is hilarious.
As I recall there was a female pilot that the brass moved
ahead too quickly because of feminist pressure. She ended up
dead.
...and that’s no fluke!
Don't forget the 1/32 Cherokee crew.
Yup, but she didn’t take out 100 shipmates
Dang.....:o)
They will still all come home smellin like Aimee ....
(bubblehead odorous maximus)
Albeit I’m not a submariner let your son know an old retired EOD troop spent a few days on the Polk an am grateful he’s taking his turn in the barrel for our country.
Stay safe Pingman !
It’s amazing how quick a quickie can be.
Gives a whole new meaning to pink submarine.
I don’t care for the mixed boat idea.
I have worked and been in the field with Army, USMC, USAF and served in USN submarines.
What I have seen with the great social experiment is lack of readiness.
How many lives will this 'experiment' cost? 24 woman and how many years of accumulated experience [NOT sitting on their tush in a classroom experience, but real-life, "hands-on" experience] in submarine operations?
“But, how is this a step forward in an area of civil rights if females are going to be segregated?”
“My question, and a serious question it is, is why is it okay to have gender segregation such as this all girl submarine?????”
This is a “Sharia-compliant” mission, can you not see that?
As directed by the first Muslim commander-in-chief?
(I would turn off the sarcasm, but how much of it -is- sarcasm?)
Well the feminist wants us to believe that men and women are interchangeable parts. They are forgetting that we all made up differently.
Women can do most no strenuous military jobs just fine. When it comes to brute strength they don’t measure up.
No women stormed the beaches at Normandy or Iwo Jima.
