The archbishop of Washington on Sunday accused the network news programs of having "missed the boat" by largely ignoring lawsuits filed this past week by Catholic institutions challenging the Obama administration's so-called contraception mandate.
Cardinal Donald Wuerl, speaking on "Fox News Sunday," was responding to an analysis by the conservative Media Research Center of how the networks' evening newscasts treated coverage of the dozen federal lawsuits filed Monday. According to the center, CBS spent 19 seconds on the story after it broke, while the other networks gave it no coverage.
"It is puzzling, particularly since they're focusing so much attention right now on the pope's butler," Wuerl said, in reference the scandal in which the pope's butler Paolo Gabriele was charged with stealing sensitive documents and is suspected of leaking them.
"It seems to me that somehow they've missed the boat. They've missed the story," Wuerl said.
The story, the archbishop said, is "religious liberty."

Great to see the archbishop slam the media for their malfesaence.
make that malfeasance.
Don’t you think that the networks “missed the boat” deliberately? If not deliberately, would it be because they don’t think that religion is important, except for the votes of their “bitterly clinging” members in November?
Despicable!
All to push their socialist agenda. It's NOT news.
>> “It seems to me that somehow they’ve missed the boat. They’ve missed the story,” Wuerl said.
That “somehow”, Archibishop, is found in their utter contempt for Jesus Christ and His church.
I believe it’s called propaganda. Hitler never had it this good.
It’s all part of the Barack (Leftist) Protection Team.
Question 1? If they’ll do this, what’s next? Where will they stop?
It’s a scale: A little lie, told here and there, until the bigger ones come out, here and there, and so on and so forth, until everything they say is BS, and everything they don’t tell is truly newsworthy, to the point that we no longer have anything like a free press.
Question 2?
How far along are they on that scale?
the bishops don't understand America.
This was a great interview. The good father kindly tells it like it is. How could our mainstream press be so bad?
Looks like the Bishops didn’t read the fine print when they initially jumped all in favor of it.
They're not stupid people. In fact, they're shrewd. The charitable part of me thinks they knew they had to do this because the only way to kill this beast would be to defeat it with legal precedent -- otherwise it's always laying in wait for more cooperative times.
I partly do believe that, but I simply cannot trust the President of the USCCB. I suppose he'll prove me wrong, but it will be over my visceral objections if it happens.
They should know that there is a price to pay when you bargain with the devil.
Is Cardinal Wuerl so dumb as to think that the networks “missed the boat”.But I would like to know if it was announced off all the pulpits at Sunday mass in his Archdiocese. It was not done in the NY Archdiocese.I have a feeling this will be settled for the right amount of dollars.
They didn’t miss the boat. They collectively decided that there was no boat.
They all did not.
There is a struggle in the Catholic Church, indeed, every church, between good men, Chrisitians, and evil.
Satan got the first woman, a perfect woman, Eve, to do his bidding by deciet and lies. She in turn got her perfect husband to do the same. They were the parents of us all.
People today, including Bishops, are not as perfect, and fall for his lies still.
I really do believe the struggle against the Left is part of this ongoing battle.
Still, there were men in the Church who saw right through Obamacare from the beginning. Cardinal Wuerl was one of them.
Leni
Actually, he wrote the book on it.
I read Mein Kampf last year..A slow slog through a lunatic's writings. But it's all there, including a complicit media, various "enemies", campaign promises never intended to be kept, but rather duplicity and lies, a private army, the elimination of the physically defective, and campaign slogans including "Forward".
Major religious denominations have, for the most part, been hugely supportive of government taking over charitable roles that churches and communities used to provide.
The implication is often made that if you don't support Great Society type initiatives, then you are not really a Christian. Liberals use this line a lot and it's effective.
