Texas honor student jailed for missing too much school

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX (CBS ATLANTA) -

An honor student in Texas was thrown in jail after she missed too many classes at her high school.

A judge issued Diane Tran, 17, a summons Wednesday for her excessive truancy after she missed class. She was arrested in open court.

Last month, Tran was issued a warning by the judge for missing school.

Tran said she works both full-time and part-time jobs, in addition to taking advanced and college level courses.

But the judge said Tran's case was bigger than the individual situation of one student.

"If you let one run loose, what are you gonna' do with the rest of 'em?," said Judge Lanny Moriarty. "Let them go too? A little stay in the jail for one night is not a death sentence."

Exactly. Also, if she had been suckling at the government teat, wanna bet that she would be given leeway with respect to attendance.

also PROBABLY has a smidgen of ill will toward Southeast Asians.

I wouldn't be surprised. This reads like a hardship case; there's no indication she isn't meeting her obligations in class or at work even if she isn't as present at school as dictated. Even as rigid and law-and-order minded as I am, something isn't right with this judge.

I would think this would be a civil contempt charge so there won’t be a criminal record of it to hold against her.

“You “lose” jobs.
Kim Kardashian is “loose”.”

I think for her “loose” is a job, too.

Very true. It was like pulling teeth for my brother to get an excused absence for his son from the indoctrination centers. On the same subject, he said they asked him four different times when his son moved to live with him if he had any special education needs. Extra money to be had there also. Same can also be said about reduced cost lunches (which for some unfathomable reason - you don't even have to prove a need to qualify at his district). Thankfully though, noone abuses it. /sarc

As an aside, he graduated this year and is confortably right of center. Most of his friends are too, I think the continuous liberal drumbeat in the public school may be beginning to backfire (we can hope).

What county is this?

This judge needs to spend some time gardening. Time to replace him as he has lost his mind.

What party is he a member of?

A few years ago, here on Free Republic, when I would post that behind every government teacher and principal stood armed police and courts, other Freepers would hammer me for be too extreme in my language. I've noticed that they aren't doing that any more.

Well?l....Am I being extreme? I don't think so.

Personally, I conside rour godless, government owned and run, socialist-entitlement, K-12 schools to be sooooo harmful to the child and such a threat to our nation's continuing freedom, that I will not have a government school employee for a friend. ( I don't have abortion workers as friends, either.)

Please see my tag line.

Having lived in Texas for almost four years, there is a lot of things great about this state; the judiciary isn’t one of them.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

It's probably why he was an honor student. He hadn't been dumbed down.

YES! It obviously didn't hurt her.

A little stay in the jail for one night is not a death sentence."

Yeah, what's a police record to a 16 year old?

We can't have any of that making schools look bad stuff, now can we? People might actually learn that they're not needed after all.

And where does it go from there? Before you know it, there will be kids leaving the schools left and right.

I’m confused.

Since when does a 17 year old HAVE TO attend school? When I was in school, anyone 16 or older can do as they please.

Always with the negative waves, Moriarty, always with the negative waves!

"As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their hearts desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

--H.L. Mencken, The Baltimore Evening Sun, July 26, 1920

1. Write or fax the presiding judge for Judge Lanny Moriarty’s district: Presiding Judge Olen Underwood 301 N Thompson, Ste 102 Conroe, TX 77301 (936) 538-8176 Fax: (936) 538-8167 2. Express your disapproval for the astounding “abuse of discretion” in incarcerating an orphaned, non-criminal teenager, the profoundly troubling lack of manifest justice, and the gross neglect in considering all factors. Such judges who are deficient in these ways will continue to abuse innocents, create criminals from otherwise honorable citizens, and to violate fundamental principles of the rule of law. Get this judge removed soon. It will also help other, deficient judges from abusing their discretion also. If many people do this, it WILL have a very BIG EFFECT.

Bookmarked for later letter writing. Thanks for posting this info!! Yes, let’s get behind this hardworking young lady and write some letters!

I think the best way to have conservative children is to be the parent that is consistent and conservative in their own life. As they grow up then they finally see what it means to be an American.

For all those folks who want a government hand out, I encourage them to go to Mexico where that has worked so well
