With the Texas state primary just days away, Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst is in the lead to replace Kay Bailey Hutchison in the U.S. Senate, and according to some observers, one of the factors he has working in his favor is fear.
In Texas, the lieutenant governorship is a hugely powerful position. Its occupant is the leader of the state senate, meaning he appoints committee chairmen and members, determines the order in which bills are taken up, and decides which committees get to handle specific pieces of legislation.
At the very least, everyone has to be aware of the sway Dewhurst will have if he remains lieutenant governor. And according to state insiders backing Dewhursts most prominent rival, former state solicitor general Ted Cruz, it goes beyond that: They say the Dewhurst campaign has made it clear that those who want to see their legislation pass if Dewhurst remains lieutenant governor had better back Dewhurst for senate. The Dewhurst campaign denies this categorically.
One source familiar with Texas politics who supports Cruz says that he knows a number of significant donors who also have business interests in the state and have been told by their lobbyists in Austin, Dont dare give money to Ted, dont endorse Ted . . . because if you do youll never get anything else through in Austin.

I recently moved to Texas and although I did get my Voter Card the other day, I have no idea what (or when) the Election(s) is/are about.
I am used to getting a nice, clean Voter Pamphlet.
With all the date changes, overlapping boundaries, and the lack of anything other than lawn signs, I am baffled to say the least.
Vote 4 Cruz..the idea is to force a runoff - I think you’ll end up supporting Ted, but this will give you time to research them both, and decide for yourself..
This is Dewhurst’s reputation in legal circles - he’s the quintessential Texas lieutenant governor more concerned about his own power than the best interests of the citizens of Texas.
Same here; where’s the voting guide?
Longtime Texas Freepers, help!
Welcome to Texas.
While were on the topic... the US Constitution makes the US Vice-president the President of the Senate. He could, if he wished, run the Senate. Appoint chairmen and committees. Run the voting. I have wondered why no VPs do this. VP is a Constitutional office. The VP cannot be fired by anyone, including the President of the US.
It is kind of too bad that the sort of tactics used by Barack Hussein Obama are being employed in this race against Ted Cruz.
Jon Bruning is apparently unafraid to use a little naked clout to intimidate and neuter his potential opposition. But there is historic precedent, just look back to Lyndon Baines Johnson, and his “meteoric” rise in Texas politics.
Nobody remembers Billy Sol Estes. But he was quite a money man in his day. And he owed it all to LBJ.
Like some of the current fortunes in Texas are owed to Jon Bruning.
Jon Bruning is something of a sleaze.
Thanks!
I’m just glad yer here in Texas now !
Get a CHL as soon as possible ....:o)
Educate yoursrelf with regards to Texas politics. Chech the records, not the promises.
Stay Safe !
Cruz with be getting this household’s votes on Tuesday.
Apologies, and my mistake. Jon Bruning is in NEBRASKA, not Texas.
But everything said about him applies to David Dewhurst, who IS in Texas, and is every bit of the sleaze that would use the clout of his office to hammer opposition.
Here’s another link for the Heritage voting guide. just sigh up to receive.

Politics is dirty on every level. I used to think that politicians worked for the good of their constituents. I guess it hasn’t been that way probably in my life time. So very sad.
I’d forgotten about ol’ Billy Sol - remember Clinton Manges? Similar MO’s - Manges made a lot of money mining uranium with unprotected Mexican labor. Among other things.
What’s a voting guide?? All you need to know is on your voter registration card. Call your courthouse or check your local newspaper or radio to find out where to vote.
Go in, tell them you want a Republican ballot. Vote in the races you’re familiar with. Many are unopposed (hence the low Democrat turnout.) Don’t vote in the races you’re not sure of.
Does that help?
Find your county’s website and you should be able to get a sample ballot to at least know what you can vote on and your polling place. It’s quite different from California.
LOL...Billy Sol Estes...yup he was quite the con-man. He purchased an old motel here after he “reformed” to help with drug and alcohol recovery. As you would think...even that was a bust.
He was involved in horse racing in Brady....yup...he’s been into everything.
I’m not totally against Dewhurst, since I’ve heard decent things about him from very close friends who know him well. BUT...I’m supporting Cruz, so we’ll have a runoff and more people can have a chance to get educated on their positions.
Well we do do things a bit different down here. This year was more of a mess than usual because Washington wouldn’t get out of our lives when it came to redrawing the lines. Confusion sometimes arises because although you think you may live in a city, you actually are in the county for voting purposes. My son lives two miles from me and his ballot was quite a bit different than min.
If you are a guy and have a wife, she should look for a Republican Women’s group to join. We have lots of guys in our group and not all their wives belong. It is the one organization I know of where you may be able to meet most of the candidates and listen to them speak so it’s a great way to find out what is going on. It is difficult to get the straight skinny if you try to do this on your own. Politics vary more from one area to another than any other state that I know of. Plus you have to know for instance that the Railroad Commissioner doesn’t actually handle railroads but is very important to the energy field.
Welcome to Texas!
