[history]
A Collier County man accused of shooting two doe deer says he needed to feed his family.
The Naples Daily News reports Castillo told deputies he shot the deer because he was unemployed and needed food to feed his family. He said he was on his way home from dog hunting with his son when he spotted two deer running across the road. Castillo said he got out of his car and shot them.

My father hunted squirrel and rabbit. Fatback and gravy biscuits. Served at every meal with squirrel or rabbit. Father and his brother both became expert shots before the war. One shot ... One kill. Dogs were not discussed.

This man has poached the King’s deer! Sheriff Nottingham, take him to the gallows!

All that subsistence hunting made my father a crack shot, so good he spent WWII in the states instructing other grunts in marksmanship.
He never claimed hero status but maIntained that he was in uniform and under orders and was never consulted by the army as to where he should serve.

Yes, the entire United States was armed and encamped awaiting what never came. Men were men. Women were women. Each person knew what to do (almost) instinctively. Today doesn't look like yesterday. (imho)

“My father hunted squirrel and rabbit.”
So did mine. Really, growing up hunting, that’s all I was taught to hunt. My dad didn’t hunt anything else because that was it. There were no deer (in the 60s,70s) unless you saw them in a zoo. No turkeys either.

It would be a whole lot easier to raise rabbits than go driving around looking for deer to shoot.

that’s SO funny! I never thought about it before ... but I never saw a deer in real life till I was an adult. Spent my entire youth hunting rabbits and squirels too (and birds)!

Sorry, I posted to the wrong thread. Having 2 active threads open at the same time in separate windows is a bad habit I have acquired.
I simply goofed.

His first FBI posting was in rural upstate New York where there were lots of people so poor they relied on poaching to feed their families.I can relate to that. Growing up in Northern Pennsylvania in the '50s we ate a lot of illegal deer out of necessity (8 kids and Dad unemployed a lot of the time).
It is very likely better for us than beef because they aren't fattened up with chemical foodstuffs like they beef are in the slaughter yards.

Squirrel, groundhog, raccoon, even possum. All edible if we return to depression era conditions.
Possums are nasty from what I hear, but groundhog, if cooked right, isn’t bad at all.

My father was a CO and they didn't bother the subsistence hunters who were struggling to feed their families. The poachers, however, were hunted like prey.

I’m sure it is going on today in many parts of Pennsylvania.
And if caught and convicted, I am sure the offender is signed up for food stamps as part of his “rehabilitation”.
