DENVER -- A US Postal Service letter carrier was attacked by two dogs in a Denver neighborhood Monday afternoon.
Denver police said the postal worker was delivering mail at West 34th Avenue and Utica Street when she was bit.
The female employee suffered extensive injuries and was transported to the hospital to be treated, said David Rupert, a spokesman for the US Postal Service.
A neighbor saw what was happening and came to the letter carrier's rescue, but was injured as well, Rupert said.
The two dogs were eventually corralled and taken away. The dogs were described as a Malumute mix and a Chow mix.
Denver Animal Control is investigating.
Coincidentally, this week is USPS Dog Bite Prevention Week, Rupert said. Denver ranks as the No. 8 city in the U.S. for dog attacks on postal carriers, which should cause some alarm, he said.

can you say ruinous third party lawsuit
Don’t they carry pepper spray?

Great idea....that stuff will knock the dogs off in their tracks.
It’s good to see that Denver’s breed ban legislation is so effective.

Mixed with pit bull, perhaps?
I guarantee that if I was a letter carrier I would never be bit by a dog. I would carry a racket ball racket and when they came after me, I would strain their noses off the back wall.
Wasp spray would work good too. It will hit them 15ft away.

I was a letter carrier in the inner city for four summers when I was in college. Getting attacked by dogs happened every day. Have they stopped issuing HALT to the carriers?
I got caught between the front fence and a porch when I heard a growl from behind me. It was the biggest German shepard you can imagine. I thought I was a tough guy. I pulled out the spray, aimed, and pressed the button. The liquid dribbled down my wrist. There was no pressure in the can.
I took the mail bag and swung it at the dog.
I got out..but the key is not to let them get close enough to hit.
Oven cleaner is some bad stuff alright but it doesn’t squirt out very far. I don’t want a raging dog lunging at me before it gets close enough for me to hit it with the spray.
Impossible. Pit bulls are illegal in Denver.
Bet everyone thinks she went STRAIGHT to the hospital. Nope.
First stop was a meeting with the letter-carrier union steward and postal management.
The carrier will be taking early retirement on partial disability...or full disability if she can get it.
The neighbor that helped her...? He gets free mail delivery the rest of his life.
Used to be they'd have about 60,000 dog bites per year, and then when the lawsuits started up, that dropped down to the low dozens.
Amazingly when people find out little woof-woof could cost them their house, savings and any other property they owned they discover that their dogs don't need to bite anyone anymore!
Still, notice these people had TO THE DOOR DELIVERY SERVICE. Most of us don't get that kind ~ we usually have to walk down the drive to the road, or maybe down the road to a neighborhood kiosk (or cluster box).
This is another reason to Un-grandfather to the door delivery. There was no need for this bite to happen!
