With an approval rating stuck below 50 percent, a sour national mood, and polls showing him tied or trailing rival Mitt Romney, President Barack Obama's re-election bid faces an uncertain future.
Gallup polls show that Obamas job approval rating in the first week of May averaged just 47 percent and a May 3-6 Gallup poll found only 24 percent of Americans were satisfied with the way things are going.
A poll released Thursday in the battleground state of North Carolina showed Romney leading the president, and the same day another poll showed Wisconsin which Obama won handily in 2008 is a toss-up, with Obama and Romney in a dead heat.
All this signals bad news for the incumbent president.
Comparing today's economic and political ratings with those from previous years when presidents sought re-election reveals that today's climate is more similar to years when incumbents lost than when they won, Gallup noted.

>>> If Romney gets elected the stock market will instantly soar, investment will return, and businesses will begin to hire and thrive.
The right side’s hopey changey.
What is strangling business and investment is our overbloated government and regulations.
None of which a president Romney is going to address, he’s just not the type for a Constitutional Republic kind of guy.
Gallup should stop giving the nation false hope.
We are in for 4 more years of the fake citizen usurper Obama and his minions.
They will CHEAT their way to win in this lawless environment.
The question is, what are we going to do about it?
I don't. I think our last fair presidential election was 2006.
We are post-Constitutional now. The Usurper and Plugs, along with all their appointed cronies, are going to have to be arrested by federal marshals, or by the military, before we will get back to Constitutionality.
The difference is only in degree, not type. They are both statists. They are both for massive government control and loss of freedom. Their methods may differ somewhat, but they both will take us to the same place.
I will not vote for either. As if my vote actually counted. In Spain.
May only be a difference of degree, but compared to Obama - who will govern to the left of himself in a 2nd term (just ask president Medvedev) -
I'll take my chances with a president Romney.
The illegal bastard won’t lose a close election, granted.
But they can’t help him if it’s a landslide.
lol
That is just not true. The economy will take off the day he wins the election just on the basis of having a republican in the house. Romney will lift hundreds of new, strangling, inappropriate, economy-killing regulations the first day he’s sworn in. He’s not the constitutionalist we all want, but he’ll be a decent manager, nay a pretty good one, one that’s got experience in high-profile turnarounds. I think he’ll do pretty well.
We’ve got to save the country before we bring back the constitution. With all respect, please don’t come on here and purvey doom and gloom. It doesn’t help anything.
Every economic indicater is worse than when the Won took over and they all look Carter-esque.
I’m going out on a limb and say Obama is going to lose big. Reagan over Carter Landslide big. And that will be amazing considering Romney is nowhere near Reagan-esque.
Considering that there was no presidential election in 2006, you are probably right.
Jim Robinson has since written another post with regards to Romney.
Sorry, slip of the KB. I meant 2004.
Sorry, I just don't believe this. Unless people have a "conversion experience", they act according to their past behavior.
Romney is a statist. He wants MORE economy-killing regulations, not less. He CREATED Obamacare in MA. Gun control? Romney LOVES it. Environmental crap? CAP & TRADE , baby. That's probably what he'll do on the first day, instead of cutting regulation, Romney will accelerate it.
Why do you think Romney is an any different?
What do you mean?
Romney is severely conservative and surely someone can off hand lay out Romney's claim to fame as the severely conservative one via his history!
To bad Joe isn't in the race.
We are really screwed if we get Mitt with a mandate.
Sucker us once shame on you, sucker us twice shame on us.
After Jimmy Carter’s miserable term, Ronald Reagan swept the election by a landslide.
My prediction for this election. Folks are so fed up, this bozo’s gonna lose big.
I agree. What really will change? In any case 8 months is enough time for Romney to blow it.
12/15/2008 $1.29 per gallon of gas here in Houston.
5/18/2008 $3.80 per gallon of gas.
Not a big Romney fan, but I’m thinking he would reign in the EPA.
