Sunland Park, N.M. There is perhaps no other city in the country like Sunland Park, N.M.
The dusty border town minutes from El Paso, Texas, has been called "a city in chaos" by the state auditor, because a slew of public officials are facing felony charges that they ran City Hall like a personal piggy bank, tried to steal an election in order to remain in power and ruled the 14,000 residents through intimidation and fear.
The state is now moving to take over financial oversight of the city, as the council scrambles to try and name a new mayor.
The explosive case even involves Mexican prostitutes, strippers and an undercover video of a mayoral candidate getting a lap dance from a topless woman. The video allegedly was used to try to force him to drop out of the race.
Authorities say the extortion investigation has revealed widespread voter fraud and public corruption in the small city just south of the Rio Grande.
"It started with extortion charges, and from that it then led us to the voter fraud cases," says Dona Ana Third Judicial District Attorney Amy Orlando, who is prosecuting the growing case.

Hernandez said he is saddened by the fraud he says he has witnessed..
“The vote is the sacred right of the United States, of citizens of the United States,” he said. “We are the example of democracy for the world, for the entire world. It shouldn’t be happening.”

It’s been an ongoing saga for quite some time now and yours is a close description!

Nowhere in the article mentions the political affiliation of the Mayor.

Nowhere in the article mentions the political affiliation of the Mayor. Yeah, but do they really have to?

Were there not a couple of cities in southern Los Angeles area which had similar problems?
They spent money hand over fist & kept taxing the few residents who lived there. Personal piggy bank does not describe what I remember. Compton?? City of Commerce?
To: ridesthemiles
eyep, but I can’t remember the city either....

It was Hernandez who was caught on tape getting a lap dance from a topless woman. And he claims it was a set up. He is a human, after all.
I feel bad for this town that they had nobody with an ounce of integrity running for Mayor and having control of their tax money.

Yes. The Mayor, city manager, and police chief made more than 500k per year in salary. The state stepped in and several were charged for other crimes but the salaries and retirement of the police chief were legal since they voted themselves the raises through the city council.

I haven't seen the video which was supposedly used to extort him. I suppose it depends on his behavior during the dance but it seems a pretty lame accusation - the guy got a lap dance. Big deal, he is not the one under criminal charges, apparently he violated no laws.
I got a lap dance for my 50th birthday and the young lady wasn't just topless. No touching. I don't know if that was state law or house rules but regardless I had no intention of doing anything other than watch, just a fun little thing to mark off the bucket list.
My wife was there too. The only time I have ever been to a strip club without her was the bachelor party a few days before we were married.

Wonder how many residents are illegals? If a majority, it would certainly explain a lot.
