A sprawling housing complex in the Bronx has been fined $85,000 for not allowing residents to keep emotional-support dogs.

The Daily News reports that the company that manages Co-op City was fined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for denying two clinically depressed residents their pets.

Co-op City has a strict no-dog policy, but federal law requires housing providers to make accommodations . . .

So I can bring my cat into the grocery store as emotional support?

Co-Op City doesn’t allow pets? Oh yeah, it’s such a gem of a building, who would want to sully it with dogs and cats.

I approve of service dogs, but they are going a bit to far with “emotional-support dogs”. If you want a pet for company, I approve completely, but get a home and a life where you are not imposing on the property owner. [Note: when I had rental property, I permitted pets, but that was my choice.]

Emotional support dogs for people who are “clinically” depressed (a huge segment of the population) is ludicrous.

By all means - get a dog for emotional support - but don't demand that people treat your (usually untrained and unnecessary) dog as if it were a seeing eye dog for a blind person (totally trained to completely necessary).

My Pembroke Welsh Corgi can definitely cheer me up, but emotional support?

I’d need emotional support, too, if I lived in the Bronx.

I need emotional support any time the Democrats are running the government. I have this maniacal desire to break things when I see one on TV. A snuggly dog is just the thing to reduce my blood pressure about 30 points.

No mention if there was a valid reason to have an emotional attachment pet in the coop.

What if this building was designed to house people with pet allergies?

What the gov’t (at any level) can't tax, they regulate. With regulation comes such forms of idiocy.

Tell that to the thousands of military vets who are off their nasty psych meds because benevolent organizations provided them with ES/PTSD dogs.

You should be asahamed of yourself, as should everyone who mocked emotional support dogs.

And yes they do have to be trained.

This place nauseates me sometimes.

Proud supporter of veteran’s support dog organizations..

Co-op City is a very old building in the Bronx. It replaced the great Freedomland Amusement Park sometime in the 60s. They are pretty awful-looking buildings, extremely tall, middle-income and NOT designed for pet allergies, lol!

I’ve had dogs for 47 years. I’ve always selected homes or apartments where I was allowed to have dogs built into the contract. Some of my family members have bad allergies to dogs and cats, and can’t visit us as a result. I feel kind of sorry for people of modest means who have signed a contract for a pet-free environment but might not be able to avoid the allergens. Then again, if they’re that fragile, maybe they belong in a bubble. What do you think the solution is?

Some people forget there really are people who need help.. Not everyone is trying to scam the system.. Dogs should be allowed almost everywhere.. It would make for a better World.
