The Republican Party faces a threat to its existence. Its not an ideological threat, but a demographic and mathematical one. Unless the GOP acts to change the math by broadening its appeal to minorities, it will cease being a major force in American politics.
If you have any doubt about this, look at the numbers:
In 1960, white Americans made up 94 percent of the electorate. By 2010, the figure had dropped to 75 percent.
Among African-Americans, more than 90 percent vote Democratic, and in the 2008 presidential race, 96 percent chose President Obama. For Asian-Americans, a clear majority consistently votes Democratic. In the last presidential election, 56 percent voted for Obama.
Among Hispanic-Americans, the fastest growing segment of the electorate, the ratio of Democrats to Republicans is about 2-to-1. Eight years ago, four out of 10 Hispanics voted for ...

Got a workable solution Mr. Depth?
oh?
and what is that “slide”?
Interesting pick, would neutralize the impact Goode would have in VA.
Rubio is a (partial) first term Senator, inexperienced, ineligible, minority.
HELLO???????????????????????????????????
I hope not. McDonnell is not as conservative as many think he is.
If the GOP goes down, something else (perhaps something better) will quickly arise.
“Its not an ideological threat, but a demographic and mathematical one.”
Uh, yes it is an ideological threat, because you assume racial/ethnic minorities will continue to have a certain ideology. Your answer, by the way, being that the GOP needs to broaden its appeal itself is obviously ideological: either the GOP needs to change its ideology or it needs to change minorities’ ideology, or both. What a stupid article.
What exactly is his immigration plan?
It's a better idea to let the GOP die and construct a new party that rejects the current status quo of either current party. It's probably already too late anyways as we now have too many parasites and a return to sanity is likely not possible again without another civil war.
53% of Hispanics self-describe themselves as white. Hispanics can be of any race.
Virginia is on the Red Blue fence, his candidacy would secure Virginia in the Red column.
George Allen is in a close Senate race in Virginia. McDonnell coattails would swing this close race to Allen.
As sitting Virginia Governor, he will have a huge impact on organization in his state.
With McDonnell on the ticket, Virginia will look like Romney's first Southern state.
He's Pro Life, pro off shore drilling, pro gun, pro charter schools, pro jobs, pro Christian beliefs (has made several statements that could be considered anti gay), Pro traditional marriage.

Rubio is for amnesty so to hell with him
They don't assimilate, they Balkanize.
Gay Adoption, Romney Care and now Open Borders, that makes the ticket broad based for sure. </sarcasm>
What exactly is his immigration plan?
1 - It’s not finished yet
2 - Close the Border
3 - Make INS more efficient (process faster)
4 - Provide mechanism for students to stay under student visa’s, but they’d still go to back of line for legal imigration & citizenship.
There’s more, but I don’t have interview clip in front of me...
I second what you said.
“There is a Pollyann-ish cohort of conservatives who believe that anyone and everyone will embrace conservatism if only they can be shown conservative principles, they will logically see such principles as superior and will choose them over liberalism.”
That’s the ‘America-is-a-Proposition-Nation’ crowd.
For them, the founding American people with the culture that they passed on to their children counts for nothing.
Deportation won’t be part of Rubio’s ‘plan’, that’s certain.
4 - Provide mechanism for students to stay under student visas, but theyd still go to back of line for legal imigration & citizenship.
Rubio is referring to so-called "children" who were brought here by their illegal parents. It is his version of the Dream Act. But issuing them student visas will not resolve the issue. They should go out of the country to apply for legal immigration to this country. And what about those "children" who don't want to go to college? Can they stay as well?
Rubio is advocating amnesty. When you reward something, you get more of it. And when those students get their status legalized and reach age 21, they can sponsor their relatives, including their parents, to come here legally. And how fair is it to those children of intending legal immigrants who are waiting overseas for their turn to enter and attend US schools?
It remains to be seen how much of an asset McDonnell will be for Romney or Allen. And Allen is by no means a strong conservative. Bob Marshall and Jamie Radtke are far more conservative.
McDonnell has endorsed Bolling over Cuccinelli. That should tell you something.
“And when those students get their status legalized and reach age 21, they can sponsor...”
Why do you pretend to finish a bill the author isn’t done with?
These “amnesty” and “Dream” labels are designed by folks suggesting “Ship them all home” is something that we’ll implement.
An element I didn’t mention are the penalties for employers of illegal immigrants, which clearly has a self-deportation effect.
How do you position yourself to criticize the “close the border” element as unrealistic, and then suggest that “shipping them all home” is the only realistic and acceptable approach?
Where’s YOUR realistic plan?
