A former U.S. Attorney appointed by President Obama who previously came under scrutiny by the Jewish Orthodox community may soon be confirmed by the U.S. Senate for a federal judgeship, after she received a majority vote from the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Stephanie Rose, 39, was recently nominated for a lifetime appointment by President Obama in the Southern District of Iowa.
Roses appointment is controversial within the Orthodox Jewish community because of her previous involvement in the prosecution of Sholom Rubashkin, the former CEO of a now-bankrupt, Iowa-based Kosher meatpacking company that was accused of employing hundreds of illegal immigrants and violating child labor laws.
Rubashkins company, Agriprocessors, reportedly the largest kosher meat producer in the United States, had its Postville, Iowa plant raided by federal officials and shut down in May 2008. FBI and Homeland Security agents stormed the plant and arrested 389 illegal workers, which was at the time the largest raid in the United States.
Rose fast-tracked those prosecutions, a term used within the legal community for expeditious charging and plea bargains, a process widely used by state and federal prosecutors in the past, including former Bush administration Attorney General, John Ashcroft.
In November 2009, Rubashkin was prosecuted by then U.S. Attorney Rose in the Northern District of Iowa and he was convicted of 86 counts of financial crimes including bank fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. A few months later in June 2010, he was sentenced to a stunning 27 years in federal prison even after being acquitted of violating child labor laws in a separate trial. Rubashkin appealed the conviction, but a federal court of appeals ruled against him in September 2011.

No question this was a punishment to Chabad. Morever, most business owners whose businesses are raided have the illegal removed (who go on to other jobs now, Bush had deported them), and paid fines of as little as $20,000 to as much as $1.2 million. NO OTHER OWNER got more than 3 months in prison. But this guy gets 27 years?
Think of him as another Pollard.
Only those who bow down to King BOZer0 get his favor.
Opponents especially Jews well the’re SOL.
I don’t have a problem with the guy getting time; he broke the law.
I do have a problem with selective prosecution of political opponents.
This is not the only thing that Obama and/or his Administration has done to anger Orthodox Jews. But, sad to say, the American Jews, who are very liberal, will still go for Obama 70% even though he has been rude to, and disrespected, Bibi Netanyahu and thrown the nation of Israel under the bus. I don’t know what’s wrong with the American Jews.
Agriprocessors pretty well wrecked that town. It doesn’t seem to have occurred to them to pay American workers a decent wage and treat them with respect. Not only did they bring in illegal, un-visaed, mostly Mexican workers for the slaughterhouse, they sponsored Chinese immigrants as slaughterhouse workers who were never going to work there - the Chinese paid 30K for their visa, considered it money well-spent and disappeared into San Francisco.
The Orthodox complaining about this is like Italians complaining when some Mafia don gets sent away.
Could it have been selective prosecution? Sure. The crying shame is not that Rubashkin got sent away for 27 years; it’s that hundreds of corporate executives who sold out their fellow Americans aren’t following him, not to mention hundreds of federal officials who won’t enforce the law and sold out their country.
We read last week that the Orthodox don’t care much for snitches who report child sex abusers, either. Tough beans.
Irrelevant when talking about Orthodox.

I know. I guess I was mixing apples and oranges there. I’m not sure how many Orthodox Jews there are in America. I’d be interested in that demographic. Guess I could do a Google search.
Everyone they hired had apparently legit documents.
When the government attempted a sting by having someone apply for a job as an illegal, the applicant was turned down for the job and sent away.
