In one of the most talked-about moments from the hit TV show Glee, Blaine declared his love for Kurt and then they kissed.
Glee is just one of many popular shows on television right now that feature gay characters. Those characters aren't just entertaining us, they're changing Americans' attitudes toward homosexuality.
In five separate studies, professor Edward Schiappa and his colleagues at the University of Minnesota have found that the presence of gay characters on television programs decreases prejudices among viewers.
"These attitude changes are not huge," he says. "They don't change bigots into saints. But they can snowball."
Schiappa tells weekends on All Things Considered host Guy Raz that indeed, as Vice President Joe Biden said last Sunday, the hit TV show Will and Grace really did help America get to know gay people.

There’s a more subtle factor involved here.
As do Tocqueville talked about almost 200 years ago, democratic societies are peculiarly vulnerable to peer pressure.
As he pointed out, democratic societies have the majority consensus as their only criterion of right and wrong. That’s why we spend so much time and effort polling. If 59% of Americans believe something, by definition it is right. (Or so goes the thought.)
What these shows do is gradually convince more Americans that most people approve of this behavior, and most Americans don’t have anything to base their beliefs on other than “what most people believe.” So their ideas change.
German television is horrible. One homosexual is my limit, more than that and I leave the room. Last summer my wife called Big Brother to vote out an “annoying homosexual” and won an iPad2.
That’s when glee was off the view list for my teenage kids. When gay characters come on they laugh now and I always point out that they’re just sick individuals with gender identity issues, poor impulse control and need psychiatric help.
Refuse 'gay'
They are homosexuals.
They are sodomites.
Refuse - personally and daily - to be a willing participant in the theft of our language and the co-opting of the political terms of engagement !
bflr
That wouldn’t surprise me a bit
His name is Blaine? That's a major appliance, that's not a name!
I knew there was a reason that my TV consumption dropped to nearly zero.
Only my wife is allowed to tell me what to think!
It’s been WELL documented on FR over the years how Hollywood was going to change the ‘Perception’ of Gays, and create a “Gay Civil Rights’ movement, where gays get the same government benefits that minorities do.
Today, Gay is the the only ‘Minority’ you can CHOOSE to be a part of.
This article is from NPR.
Imagine how their core audience's heads would explode if this were reformulated to approvingly quote a professor whose thesis was that if NPR were to feature more Conservative commentary, and Conservative views were given favorable treatment in NPR broadcasts, it would decrease anti-Conservative prejudice and bigotry that currently run rampant within the NPR audience.
...and Glee was supposed to be the non-homosexual show that was supposed to make glee club cool.
instead they killed glee-club permanently.
It’s getting tougher and tougher to watch DIY shows on HGTV or even the House Hunter shows. They all make sure they have their quota of gay people on them.
The v-chip should be able to screen out homosexual content.
In fact the ratings system should be REQUIRED to have an “H” label for homosexual content. let the view decide.
If you formed your opinion only from TV shows like that, you’d surmise that about 25-40% of the population is gay.
Uh, Joe - Will isn't real. Grace isn't real.
I wonder how prevalent this type of delusional thinking is. I have a friend, a lawyer, who was losing an argument about capital punishment. He played what he though was the winning hand - he told the people in the room about a MOVIE which revealed the truth about the injustice of the death penalty.
I thought to myself, "OMG! The leftists are making public policy BASED ON FICTION!"
I gave up on HGTV a few years ago.....way too many cohabitating fags.
If it wasn’t for EWTN, I’d get rid of tv.
I am very picky with what I watch-and it’s usually Too Cute, Dogs 101, Storage Wars, the Turtleman guy—that kind of stuff.
Love TCM...love old movies and the way life was portrayed in them...and no blood when someone is shot.Totally unrealistic, but if I want real, I’ll turn on the news.
I did start watching Glee, but then the ENTIRE show started to revolve around the gay kid....then they had the whole house of “boys”...ruined the show. So we have the nice, misunderstood gay kid, the kind, respected and wise fat black girl and then they brought on the mean, ugly, white fat girl.
How unpredictable.
My sister’s kids are only allowed to listen to Glee and not watch it unless one of the parents has pre-screened it...and their Democrats!!( But live in No Carolina...hmmm)
I am picky with what I watch because there are just some images I do NOT want in my brain...even with gory stuff and violence...don’t need it, don’t want it...ever!
My 7 yr old nephew turned me on to Phineas and Ferb last summer and it is one of my favorite shows in the Tri State Area!
Has anyone seen Perry?
:)
“Those characters aren’t just entertaining us, they’re changing Americans’ attitudes toward homosexuality. “
And not for the better.
ONLY if you’re willing to become joined at the hip. Tune it off.
