LYNCHBURG, Va. Evangelical leaders praised Mitt Romneys speech today at Liberty University, saying that the Mormon candidate was right to acknowledge his religious differences with other Christian voters.
It was an acknowledgment that the issues that social conservatives and evangelicals care about are important issues to Gov. Romney and as he sees them [as] part of a successful economic platform for the country, said Family Research Council President Tony Perkins.
Perkins added that there wasnt anything the presumptive GOP presidential nominee who many evangelical voters regarded with skepticism during the primary while backing Rick Santorum should have done differently. And he pointed to the huge opportunity created for Romney by President Barack Obamas endorsement of same-sex marriage this week (Romney opposes gay marriage).
I think he touched on the key issues that are important to social conservatives. He mentioned Rick Santorum and Ricks emphasis and the need to have the family and the ties to economic success. (See also: 10 essential facts about Liberty U.)
Regarding Romneys acknowledgement that Mormonism differs from other Christian faiths in certain ways, Perkins said the candidate was correct to tackle the issue.
That was what he needed to do, was to acknowledge that there are theological differences between him and evangelicals, Perkins said.

The RESTORED gospel?
The FULLNESS of the gospel?
Are you saying that MORMONs have ABANDONED their first love?
Office of First President & Living Prophet November 1st, 2011 The message for this month is -
|
From the Desk of TM: Attention FreeRepublic Anti-ANTI Team:
An error occured in the last memo, as it was supposed to read:
...call them nasties... Hopefully no problems occured this weekend because of a Headquarter's foul up. Keep up the good work on FR. We've been getting HUNDREDS of hitS on our websites by those evidently seeking the truth.
Watch next month's ENSIGN for the new membership figures; due, no doubt, to the tireless work by you faithful typists! Sincerely (continue using THAT word), Thomas Monson, |
Everyone who makes different political judgements than you do is on the take, huh?
I don't really know what Romney's core political ideology is, or whether he even has one.
However, Romney is running as a conservative now and if he gets elected President, and if the GOP controls both houses of Congress, then I think we will get more conservative policies and appointments than we would get from Obama.
Because he's a loon?
Yeah. That. Neither literally nor approximately.
So you were playing dumb in that post, you really don’t want to know that he is a lifelong liberal, and that he is faking this new thing. You really are not an honest poster.
If you read post 180 you will learn “”what Romney’s core political ideology is, or whether he even has one.””
Quit lying to us and to yourself, and start reading the information people give in answer to your dishonest, pretend ignorance.
Did you read the transcript in 165, showing you that indeed, Bishop Romney was explaining that Mormonism is not pro-life?
Man, you are a piece of work, are you a Mormon devotee to the man, or just a totally captivated non-Mormon devotee?
Why; I might ask?
I have strongly mixed feelings about Ron Paul. Some aspects of his character and platform I like very much, some I dislike very much.
But that is beside the point. Ron Paul is not important because he cannot defeat Romney and win the nomination. That has already been settled and no amount of Pauliac delegate treachery will change this result.
Neither.
You claim to not know anything about all that we have been posting for 6 years about your man Mitt, and you post nonsense like this (not to me)as you deny that Mitt has problems, and lie for the man.
“I don’t think you’re being honest here.
Nobody on this site is denying that Mitt has problems.
Some of us want him to beat Obama anyway.
I think you know this and are lying about it.
My question to you is, why? Why lie?
How exactly does lying about other conservatives here on FR help America?”
They are free to believe as they will and Im 100% fine with that.
I am glad you support the First Amendment of the Constitution and are charitable enough not to prohibit Mormons the free exercise of their religion. But you know something, it is not up to you to decide whether it is fine or not. Mormons have the inalienable right to worship as they please. And so does everyone else in this country.
A cult can claim what it wants to, but Christianity from Catholics to Baptists, from Orthodox to Methodists, and so on, all agree that Mormonism is not a Christian religion.
Romney is a very high, very powerful Mormon leader, that will rise even higher after this presidential effort, which by the way, is coordinated with a multi-million dollar publicity and recruiting effort from the Bishops religion, the presidential effort itself was approved by their Holy Prophet, this is historical stuff, and it is natural that this is important to Christians and literally all Americans.
So what should be done with the Mormons? Do you believe that they represent a danger to this country?
So don’t vote for him if you believe he is part of a Mormon conspiracy to take over the country. Personaly, I am not threatened by Mormons. I have worked and associated with them in the military and in the Foreign Service. They are decent, family oriented people who try to live by the Golden Rule. In sum, they are a force for good in this world.
Why do you make the false claim that Romney is “a decent, principled person” “who has led a good life”?
You don’t know anything about his life, and all the evil he has promoted and sold to the public, through speeches, fund raising, campaigns, donations, and passionate public pleas?
The man has lived an aggressive life of recruiting and selling for evil.
Romney keeps a calm personal life for himself and his own, but he works for the other side and has served as a leader and campaigner for the dark forces.
Muslims believe that Jesus was a Prophet. Therefore, the author of that tripe might just as well have said that Islam is the largest Christian denomination in the world.
Neither Islam nor Mormonism are Christian. They are both non-Christian religions. Just because they both claim to "believe" in Jesus in some perverted sense does not make them Christian.
I’m not threatened by Mormons either, not family or friends.
You shouldn’t be threatened by Christians or conservatives, and try to sell them the lie that Mormonism is a Christian religion, or that this bizarre historical situation should be off the table for their discussion, because the Bishop/Presidential candidate is Mormon.
