Israel Not Invited to NATO's Chicago Summit

Israel will not be invited to NATO's May 20-21 summit in Chicago, the alliance's top official said Friday. But he denied that alliance member Turkey had blocked Israel's participation.

Instead, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the reason is because Israel does not participate in NATO's main military missions.

News reports have claimed that Turkey blocked Israel's participation because of the raid in 2010 by Israeli troops on ships heading to Gaza in which eight Turks and a Turkish-American died.

NATO has a system of partnerships with dozens of nations across the globe such as the Mediterranean Dialogue, a NATO outreach program with seven friendly nations, including Israel.

In the past, partner nations did not usually attend the alliance's summits. But Fogh Rasmussen said 13 would do so this time.

"At the Lisbon summit (in 2010), we made clear that we would enhance dialogue and cooperation with partner nations ... because in today's world security challenges know no borders, and no country or alliance can deal with most of them on their own," he told journalists.

I hereby formally wish to extend an invitation to the nation of Israel. I personally don’t understand why they would want to be there but I and my nation are friends of Israel and we decide who comes, not NATO.

Israel is preparing to go it alone. Rightly so, Israel knows full well that Obama will not do anything to help secure peace that involves an intact Israel. Bebe recently gave up 4 more years to secure 18 months of 75% unity within Israel. Folks, this is Israel saying they will stop Iran however necessary. They'll take a go conventionally, but in the end, they'll have to show the world, they do have, and will use its nukes. More power to them.

I didn’t understand why they would be invited, since they aren’t part of NATO. Looking at your list, it would seem that quite a few countries are pretty far from the North Atlantic (as though they needed to include former Warsaw Pact countries so they wouldn’t be so...Warsaw Pact).

Yes, I looked closer at the list too. Beyond northern countries it looks like any European country can be in. Israel does not fit in geographically, plus a lot of those Europeans countries are anti-Semitic.

That makes sense since NATO was to counter the Soviets in Europe. But these days it seems like it is not much more than another diplomat’s club where the members whine & dine and Uncle Sam picks up the tab.
