A Sukhoi Superjet 100 performing a demonstration flight for media, airline and aviation personnel with 46 people onboard crashed near a mountain in Indonesia on Wednesday. Their fate was not immediately known, as a search and rescue operation had to be called off due to bad weather.

Contact with the 100-seat jet (registration RA-97004) was lost about 20 minutes after takeoff from Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta, according to early reports. An official told Reuters that that radio contact was lost with the plane after it descended from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet. It disappeared from radar near the 7,200-ft Mount Salak.

Several Indonesian airlines, aerospace and travel concerns, along with two media organizations were represented onboard, according to a passenger manifest published by the Kompas newspaper. Sky Aviation, a new regional carrier with 12 Superjets on order, had 10 employees onboard, while Kartika Airlines, which has ordered 30 Superjets, had one rep onboard.

The list also included reps from Airfast Indonesia, Pelita Air, Sriwijaya Airlines, Air Maleo, Aviastar, Angkasa Pura, Dirgantara Indonesia, Snecma, Indo Asia, PT KAI, Carpedrem Mardin and TR. Also onboard were reporters from Bloomberg and Trans TV.

UPDATE 10:20 PM ET: Indonesian rescuers have located the plane on a mountain at an altitude of 5,200 feet, according to a Twitter report from Sergey Dolya.

This is a fairly big deal, as the Sukhoi is the first real westernized Russian Production Aircraft, and is sucking up market share from Boeing in Asia, with this lower-cost competitor.

The aircraft in question, a couple of hours before it crashed.

A 737-ski?

I’ve flown on Aeroflot, and swore I’d walk if I had to fly with them again....

Why would they call a shrunken 732 a “Super Jet?”

But prayers for the families — how strange...

One of the newscasts said that some of the passengers were “potential buyers”! Oops ... lost some potential there.

Much more like a copy of the EMB 190/195 series, in the same passenger class, than a 737 copy.

This is a top of the line commuter plane replacement, built with help from Boeing. It would not be a 737 competitor.

It is fly by wire.

The request for, and granting, of an altitude clearance that would not clear the nearby mountains is puzzling.

Embraer 190-ovitch

We used to call them Aeroplop, although their Trans-Atlantic service on 767s was not too bad.

Ever fly Cubana? They flew a/c they were too old for Aeroflot!

My guess would be flying to close to a mountain in a Demo flight.

They are also known to have problems with the entirely new, home-produced engines. Or, given Indonesia, it could be something as simple as contaminated fuel.

demonstration flight circling these mountains and flying between them does not sound like a very good idea. Pretty obvious if it was found on the mountain that either a wind shear of some sort or just pilot error/distraction caused them to fly into the 7000+ or 9000+ foot mountain when cleared to descend from 10000 to 6000...thoughts and prayers to families and friends.

“What Putin enemy was on the plane?”

Comparing Putin to Bill Clinton?
That’s low...

"......and is sucking up market share from Boeing in Asia, with this lower-cost competitor."

Incorrect.

Boeing has not lost a single order to this aircraft, nor will they.

Update tweet from an Aviation Blogger with the SAR team, that decided not to take the flight:

Translation: “We have aircraft coordinates. Altitude is 5200 feet. Helicopters have taken off to confirm location and current conditions”

Translation: “Until further information is confirmed, we have been forbidden to provide any more information. Don’t call for now”
