Rubio hopes to pass DREAM Act alternative by end of summer

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) aims to have his alternative to the DREAM Act proposal on paper in the next few weeks and passed by the end of the summer.

"Our goal is to pass something this summer in time for kids who plan to go to school this fall," Rubio press secretary Alex Conant said Monday.

Rubio's proposal would provide non-immigrant visas to illegal immigrants' children who attend college or serve in the military.

"So just like lots of people come to the United States on work visas or on student visas or tourism visas or whatever, this would be a non-immigrant visa, so it would be a temporary one," Conant said. "It wouldn't be permanent. But the intent here is if they choose to remain in the United States permanently that they could apply for permanent residence just like any other immigrant would."

Rubio's proposal is an alternative to the Democrat-backed DREAM Act, sponsored by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), which would grant legal status to illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. when they were young and then go to college or serve in the military.

Conant said Rubio's legislation would not mean the immigrants would be deported after their visa runs out.

"They could apply for permanent residence after a certain amount of time without having to return to their country of origin," Conant said. "They'd be like any other immigrant except that they could wait while they're in the United States. The Democrats' DREAM Act doesn't have them leaving the country but, as I said, it creates a special pathway for them."

Rubio's office does not yet have an estimate on how many new visas would be issued under the proposal. Conant said it depends on what the qualifying age for the visas in the legislation will be.

A day earlier, Rubio defended the proposal against criticism that it was a form of amnesty.

"We use the existing immigration system to deal with a humanitarian issue. And that is these children who entered this country illegally or have overstayed visas illegally, through no fault of their own," Rubio said on Fox News Sunday. "These are children, they follow their parents. The parents put them in this predicament."

Well, Marco, when do they become at ‘fault’? After they get caught?

Rubio...what part of ILLEGAL do you not get!

They are criminals from the day they entered, send them home, all of them, that is the compassionate thing to do, for them and all of us taxpayers who support them.

Here's a "DREAM ACT" for ya:

ALL Illegals are rounded up, prosecuted, and sentenced to a MINIMUM of 2 years in a Maximum Security, NO-FRILLS prison, OR, they can head back to the Motherland in lieu, thereof, AND, take the deposited offspring with ya....(just because a Foreigner drops a baby in the USA when visiting ILLEGALLY, does NOT MEAN they are automatically U.S. Citizens...that's the stupidest interpretation of the Constitution EVER MADE.

He likes crapping in his own nest, I guess. Without debating the merits of the substance, it seems like a really stupid thing to take up when people on our side are rightfully incensed about a lot of different things government does being in stateful derangement, immigration being one of them.

Rubio = RINO. Just say no to Rubio. He’s biting the hand that fed him.

You must be dreaming in lala land if you truly believe it will come down like that.

Reagan tried to do this in the 1980s and all it did was entice more to come here.

It is ALWAYS enticement when those who break the law are not suffering the consequences of their actions. Period.

Spin it like you wish, this is clearly not what the majority of Americans(as well as those who seek the legal way to enter this country) support.

Here’s your “lala” NOT a DREAM approach:

1-Close the Border
2-Fire current INS management and incentivise new mgmt.
3-Close a couple other Federal agencies and reallocate to INS.
4-Enforce employer sanctions for those with illegal workers.
5-Initiate strong deportation policy.
6-Enact Rubios recommendations.

Until these children reach age 18 they are under the subversion & guidance of their parents and does not matter what the kids think or want to do.It’s irrelevant, the parents put them in this predicament than have the parents arrested for child abuse. The message is parents it’s ok to break the laws, we will reward you with free college educations for your kids and you parents will never be held accountable for breaking our laws.

Yes. The same argument of imprisoned parents. Your parents or parent got put in jail. We will give you special treatment compared to the other children at large.

Absurd.

The same people that are slobbering over him and wanting him as VP are probably the same morons that were drooling over the thought of Condoleeza Rice and Colin Powell as candidates for President or VP.

Weak minded people are easily swayed and easy to stampede.

I’d say also that rather than allowing those who are willing to break the law by bringing them ahead of the line, we do the exact opposite.
Make them the last we will ever consider to become a citizen of our country.

Oh BTW, I would also add voting ID’s everwhere. That includes the nut cases in CA, where a lot of the illegals here came from originally.

THEY ARE NOT GOING TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE!!!

They are getting in the BACK OF THE LINE, albeit, with a more efficient and motivated INS.

Voter ID is an overarching need, independent of illegal immigration.

there is no way someone who breaks the law gets a pass.

An spin it as you like, they are getting a pass.

Bigtime.

Since they are not adults, they are under the direction of their parents.
Their parents broke the law.

There are laws in this country.

A country that allows its laws to be broken will itself be broken.

you are on the wrong side of most Americans on this one.

Every Florida freeper (and everyone else, too) reading this should contact Rubio immediately. Just don't sit there at the computer shaking your heads. Freep the crap out of this guy! Rubio has an email form on his home page.

I just emailed a blue dart off to him....you may have seen it streaking past your window trailing flames.

Of all the stupid things to do it's to release a dumb proposal shortly before the November election....a divisive bit of chicanery being released in a key electoral state, UNBELIEVABLE !

I'm in shock over his self-centered initiative which is guaranteed to cause division and hurt his own party's chances in the election.

.....and he is supposed to be the newbie Latino Einstein of the GOP.....maybe more like that so-called "wise Latina" on the Supreme Court.
